CHAPTER 5: THE FATHER WHO BURIED HIS OWN DAUGHTER

The basement became completely silent.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

Everyone listened to the footsteps above them.

Slow.

Calm.

Confident.

Daniel Harper was not running.

He was not afraid.

And that scared Detective Mason Cole more than anything.

Most people, when confronted with evidence of a crime, panicked.

They shouted.

They escaped.

They made mistakes.

But Daniel Harper walked through his own house like a man who still believed he was in control.

Mason quietly signaled the officers.

Two moved toward the second staircase.

One stayed beside Vanessa.

Another protected Evie.

Then Daniel’s voice echoed again.

“Evie.”

The sound made her stomach turn.

For years, that voice had meant safety.

Now it sounded like a warning.

“I know you’re down there.”

Evie clenched her fists.

Mason leaned closer.

“Stay here.”

But Evie shook her head.

“No.”

The detective looked at her.

“Evie.”

“He needs to see me.”

Mason hesitated.

She wasn’t the frightened girl who escaped the fire anymore.

She was someone who had spent six months carrying the truth alone.

Slowly, Evie stepped toward the stairs.

Vanessa grabbed her hand.

“Don’t let him convince you.”

Evie looked at her aunt.

“He already did that once.”

She released Vanessa’s hand.

“But never again.”

She climbed the stairs.

Mason followed closely behind.

When they reached the main floor, Daniel Harper stood in the center of the living room.

He looked exactly the same as he did six months ago.

Perfect suit.

Perfect hair.

Perfect expression.

Except now there was one difference.

He knew he had lost.

The moment he saw Evie, his face changed.

Not shock.

Not relief.

Fear.

“Evie…”

She stared at him.

“Why?”

Daniel said nothing.

The police officers stepped out behind her.

The illusion of control disappeared.

“Daniel Harper,” Mason said, “you’re being investigated for kidnapping, attempted murder, and illegal human experimentation.”

Daniel looked at him.

Then he smiled.

A small, cold smile.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.”

Mason didn’t move.

“I think we’re starting to understand.”

Daniel looked back at Evie.

“You found Vanessa.”

It wasn’t a question.

Evie’s expression hardened.

“You knew she was alive.”

Daniel remained silent.

That silence was enough.

“You let everyone believe she was gone.”

“She made choices.”

Evie almost laughed.

“Choices?”

Her voice shook.

“You locked her underground.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Evie, listen to me.”

“No.”

She backed away.

“You don’t get to explain this.”

His expression softened.

A performance.

The same one he used for the cameras.

For the neighbors.

For everyone.

“You were always emotional.”

Evie stared at him.

“You tried to kill me.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I tried to protect this family.”

The words were almost unbelievable.

“You burned your own house to protect your family?”

Daniel looked around.

“You don’t understand what I sacrificed.”

Mason interrupted.

“You sacrificed innocent people.”

Daniel turned toward him.

“You think the world works because of kindness?”

His voice became sharper.

“People like me make difficult decisions so people like you can sleep peacefully.”

Evie felt sick.

She finally understood.

Her father didn’t believe he was evil.

That was what made him dangerous.

He believed he was necessary.

“You locked me in my room,” Evie whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time, something like regret appeared.

Only for a second.

“I knew you would survive.”

Everyone froze.

Mason stared at him.

“What did you say?”

Daniel realized his mistake.

Too late.

Evie stepped closer.

“You knew?”

Daniel looked away.

“You were stronger than the others.”

The room went cold.

“The others?”

Mason immediately focused.

“Who are the others?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

But Evie did.

Because she had seen the files.

The photographs.

The names.

The missing people.

“You didn’t just experiment on strangers.”

She looked at him.

“You experimented on children.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Mason immediately raised his hand.

The officers moved.

But before they could reach him, Daniel reached inside his jacket.

Everyone reacted.

“Don’t move!”

Daniel pulled out a small device.

A remote.

Evie’s heart stopped.

“What is that?”

Daniel smiled.

“The insurance policy.”

Mason stared at the device.

“Put it down.”

Daniel looked at Evie.

“You really thought the basement was the only secret?”

A terrible silence followed.

“There’s another room.”

Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs behind them.

Her face turned pale.

“No…”

Daniel looked at his sister.

“You remember.”

Evie turned.

“Aunt Vanessa?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with fear.

Because she knew exactly what Daniel was about to reveal.

Daniel pressed one button.

A hidden alarm began ringing throughout the house.

Then the walls behind the fireplace slowly moved.

A hidden doorway opened.

Inside was another room.

And on the wall were dozens of photographs.

But this time…

They were not strangers.

They were all pictures of Evie.

From the day she was born.

To the day of the fire.

Mason stared.

“What is this?”

Daniel looked at his daughter.

“This is the truth.”

Evie’s blood ran cold.

Because beneath the newest photograph…

Taken the night of the fire…

Was a handwritten note.
