CHAPTER 7: THE FILE THAT EXPOSED THE HARPER EMPIRE

The countdown continued.
47:59:12
Every second felt louder than an explosion.
Detective Mason Cole stared at the screen, trying to understand what Daniel Harper had created.
“This timer,” Mason said, “what happens when it reaches zero?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He simply looked at Evie.
That was enough to make everyone nervous.
“Daniel,” Mason warned, “you’re making this worse.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Worse?”
He looked around the room.
“You still think I’m trying to escape.”
His eyes moved toward the hidden files.
“I spent twenty years building this.”
The detective stepped closer.
“And now you’re going to spend the rest of your life explaining it in prison.”
Daniel laughed quietly.
“You still believe prison is the biggest threat.”
Mason’s expression hardened.
“What did you do?”
Before Daniel could respond, Vanessa walked toward the wall of documents.
“There’s something you need to see.”
Evie followed her.
Vanessa reached behind a shelf and pulled out a thick black folder.
The cover had no name.
No label.
Only one symbol.
The same black circle.
“This is the original file,” Vanessa whispered.
Mason took it.
“Original?”
Vanessa nodded.
“The first experiment.”
He opened it carefully.
Inside were hundreds of pages.
Medical reports.
Psychological evaluations.
Private recordings.
Then he saw the first name.
Subject: Evelyn Harper.
Evie’s heart stopped.
“No…”
Mason looked at her.
“This is your file.”
She shook her head.
“I never agreed to this.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with pain.
“You were a baby.”
The detective turned the pages.
The documents showed years of observation.
Daniel had recorded everything.
Evie’s reactions.
Her fears.
Her emotional responses.
Even her dreams.
It wasn’t research.
It was obsession.
Then Mason found something that made him freeze.
A signature.
Not Daniel’s.
Someone else’s.
He looked at Vanessa.
“Who is this?”
Vanessa became silent.
Evie noticed.
“Aunt Vanessa?”
She slowly looked up.
“That’s why I stayed.”
The room went quiet.
Mason frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Vanessa looked at Evie.
“I wasn’t just trying to expose your father.”
She swallowed.
“I was trying to stop someone worse.”
A cold feeling moved through the room.
“Who?” Evie asked.
Vanessa looked at the file.
Then whispered:
“Your grandfather.”
Everyone froze.
Evie stared.
“My grandfather died years ago.”
Vanessa nodded.
“That’s what everyone believed.”
Mason immediately turned back to the documents.
“Are you saying Daniel didn’t create this?”
“No.”
Vanessa’s voice was barely audible.
“Daniel inherited it.”
Evie stepped backward.
The entire foundation of her family history was collapsing.
“My grandfather started this?”
Vanessa nodded.
“He believed the Harper family had to create stronger generations.”
She looked at the photographs.
“Your father continued his work.”
Evie felt sick.
“So my whole family…”
“Was built on this.”
Vanessa looked at her sadly.
“Yes.”
Suddenly, one of the officers shouted.
“Detective!”
Everyone turned.
The officer was standing near a computer hidden under the desk.
“It’s sending something.”
Mason rushed over.
The screen showed a file transfer.
UPLOAD DESTINATION: WORLDWIDE NETWORK
His face changed.
“Someone is releasing the files.”
Daniel smiled.
“Not someone.”
He looked at Evie.
“She is.”
Evie froze.
“What?”
Daniel pointed toward her.
“The moment you entered this room, the system recognized you.”
Mason looked at the computer.
“You built this around her?”
Daniel nodded.
“Her fingerprints. Her voice. Her DNA.”
Evie stared at him.
“You used me as a password.”
Daniel didn’t deny it.
“The world needed a witness.”
Her eyes filled with anger.
“No.”
She stepped closer.
“You needed a shield.”
For the first time, Daniel’s expression changed.
Because she was right.
He had planned everything.
If the truth came out, he wanted the world to see Evie first.
The innocent daughter.
The survivor.
The person everyone would believe.
While he disappeared behind her story.
Mason quickly typed on the computer.
“We need to stop the upload.”
An officer checked the system.
“Detective, we only have minutes.”
The countdown continued.
39:21:08
Evie looked at the screen.
Then at her father.
“You thought I would help you.”
Daniel said nothing.
“You thought because I survived, I would finish your work.”
Her voice became stronger.
“But you forgot something.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
Evie looked at the files.
At the names.
At every person he had hurt.
“I survived you.”
Silence.
Then she turned to Mason.
“Can we use the system?”
The detective looked at her.
“For what?”
Evie wiped away her tears.
“To expose him.”
Mason understood.
Daniel didn’t.
For the first time in his life, he had created something he couldn’t control.
A survivor.
Not a subject.
Not an experiment.
A person.

And Evie Harper was about to turn her father’s greatest weapon…
Against him.
