Chapter 9 - THE BRIDE WHO WALKED AWAY

By afternoon, Hawthorne Hall was surrounded by reporters.
The wedding of the year had become the scandal of the decade.
QUEEN LIVED IN SECRET IN NEW YORK.
HAWTHORNE HEIR ENGAGED TO EUROPEAN MONARCH.
ROYAL WEDDING COLLAPSES AMID CORPORATE INVESTIGATION.
The headlines multiplied by the minute.
Helena stood in the room where she had been expected to spend her wedding night.
Her suitcase was open on the bed.
Sophie watched from the doorway.
“You’re leaving?”
“Yes.”
“For Varenne?”
“The embassy residence first.”
“What about Daniel?”
Helena folded a sweater.
“I don’t know.”
Sophie entered.
“He defended you.”
“He did.”
“That has to matter.”
“It does.”
“Then why leave?”
Helena stopped.
“Because love cannot survive if one person is always deciding whether the other has passed a test.”
Sophie looked confused.
Helena sat beside her.
“I came here believing Daniel needed to prove he could love me without a crown.”
“And he did.”
“For months.”
“Yes.”
“But I also hid something enormous from him.”
Sophie lowered her eyes.
“He has the right to be angry.”
“Yes.”
“And I have the responsibility to let him decide who I am without two hundred people watching.”
Sophie nodded slowly.
Then she whispered.
“My mother is going to blame you for everything.”
“I know.”
“She’ll destroy Daniel if she can.”
Helena looked toward the window.
“Then he will have to decide whether he wants to be saved.”
Outside the estate, Daniel stood before a wall of cameras.
He had never intended to speak publicly.
Then a reporter shouted.
“Mr. Hawthorne, did Queen Helena infiltrate your family to influence Hawthorne Defense?”
Daniel stopped.
Another voice called.
“Were you aware she was a foreign sovereign?”
“Did she threaten your mother?”
“Is the engagement over?”
Daniel turned toward the cameras.
Every public relations instinct told him to say nothing.
Instead, he walked to the microphone.
“My fiancée did not infiltrate my family.”
The shouting stopped.
“She lived privately under another identity.”
He swallowed.
“I did not know that identity.”
Cameras flashed.
“I am hurt by that.”
Inside the house, Helena watched the broadcast.
Daniel continued.
“But whatever anger exists between Helena and me does not excuse what my family did to her.”
Evelyn appeared behind him.
“Daniel.”
He ignored her.
“My mother knew Helena’s identity for months.”
Reporters exploded with questions.
Evelyn went white.
Daniel kept speaking.
“She chose to humiliate her anyway.”
Helena’s eyes filled for the first time.
“And any financial misconduct involving Hawthorne companies will be investigated completely, no matter whose name is attached to it.”
Daniel stepped away.
Evelyn seized his arm.
“You just destroyed our family.”
Daniel looked at her.
“No.”
Then he saw Helena’s black royal sedan pulling away from the estate.
His voice dropped.
“I think you did that last night.”
He watched the car disappear beyond the gates.
He did not chase it.

For once, Daniel understood that love was not proven by stopping someone from leaving.
Sometimes it was proven by giving them a reason to return.
