Chapter 14 - DANIEL BURNS THE HAWTHORNE SHIELD

Daniel released the footage himself.

His attorneys begged him not to.

The board threatened him.

His mother called forty-one times.

He ignored all of them.

At noon, Hawthorne Capital issued a public statement.

Daniel Hawthorne confirmed that the company had turned internal records over to federal authorities and suspended all negotiations with Sterling Meridian.

Then Daniel posted a second statement under his own name.

It was only four sentences.

My family’s wealth does not excuse cruelty.

My mother knew Helena’s identity and chose to mistreat her anyway.

I failed Helena when I stayed silent too long.

I will not fail again by hiding the truth.

The security footage went public twenty minutes later.

The reaction was immediate.

Millions watched Evelyn order the servants to move Helena upstairs.

Millions watched Madison laugh while examining Helena’s private belongings.

Millions watched Evelyn tell Victor:

“If Daniel stays distracted until the merger closes, September won’t matter.”

Then came the clip that destroyed her carefully constructed innocence.

Evelyn stood beside the fireplace.

Victor asked:

“What if the Queen refuses to help with Varenne?”

Evelyn replied:

“Then we make sure she needs us more than we need her.”

Daniel watched the clip from his office.

His grandfather’s portrait hung behind him.

For the first time, Daniel understood why the old man had placed control of the trust in Daniel’s hands instead of Evelyn’s.

He had seen something Daniel had been too young to understand.

Power did not corrupt Evelyn Hawthorne.

Power revealed her.

The board called an emergency meeting.

Eleven directors joined by secure video.

Victor’s seat was empty.

Evelyn appeared from Hawthorne Hall.

“You have no authority to suspend the merger.”

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“As chief executive, I do.”

“You will be removed before lunch.”

“Then vote.”

The directors shifted nervously.

Evelyn smiled.

“I move to terminate Daniel Hawthorne as chief executive.”

A director seconded.

The vote began.

Five supported Evelyn.

Three supported Daniel.

Two abstained.

One remained.

Charles Hawthorne.

Evelyn stared at her husband’s face on the screen.

“Charles.”

He looked exhausted.

But calm.

“My vote is against removal.”

The motion failed.

Evelyn’s expression went blank.

Charles continued.

“I also move to suspend Evelyn Hawthorne from all board activity pending investigation.”

Daniel stared at his father.

This time, seven hands rose immediately.

The motion passed.

For the first time in thirty years, Evelyn had no seat at the Hawthorne table.

She stood without speaking.

Then she closed her laptop.

Daniel should have felt victorious.

Instead, his phone buzzed.

A message from Helena.

KELLER HAS BEEN FOUND.

Daniel immediately called.

Adrian answered.

“Where?”

“A private airfield outside London.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Did he talk?”

Adrian was silent.

Then he said:

“He claims Evelyn was not the person who hired him.”

Daniel’s blood went cold.

“Who did?”

May you like

Adrian lowered his voice.

“Someone much closer to Helena.”
