Chapter 11 - CHARLES HAWTHORNE FINALLY SPEAKS

Charles did not deny it.
When Daniel entered the office two hours later, half-burned paper covered the fireplace grate.
Sophie stood near the desk.
Charles sat in Evelyn’s chair.
He looked twenty years older.
“What were you burning?”
Charles stared into the fireplace.
“Things I should have destroyed years ago.”
Daniel’s voice sharpened.
“That is not an answer.”
Charles looked at his son.
“I helped your mother.”
Silence.
“With the bribery?”
“No.”
Charles shook his head quickly.
“Never that.”
“Then what?”
Charles opened an old ledger.
“Sterling Meridian began lending money to your mother seven years ago.”
Daniel frowned.
“For what?”
“Personal losses.”
“How much?”
Charles swallowed.
“Forty-two million.”
Sophie gasped.
Daniel stared at him.
“Mom lost forty-two million dollars?”
“More.”
Charles rubbed his face.
“Private investments.”
“Real estate.”
“A biotech company.”
“A fund in Singapore.”
“She hid everything.”
“And Madison’s father covered it?”
Charles nodded.
“In exchange for influence.”
Daniel understood.
“The merger.”
“Yes.”
“Madison.”
Charles closed his eyes.
“The engagement was part of it.”
Sophie stared at him.
“You mean Daniel marrying Madison was a business agreement?”
“Not formally.”
“That means yes,” Daniel said.
Charles looked ashamed.
“When you ended the engagement, Evelyn panicked.”
Daniel remembered Madison crying publicly.
His mother refusing to speak to him for weeks.
The board suddenly questioning his leadership.
It had never been about heartbreak.
It had been debt.
“What happens if the merger fails?”
Charles whispered.
“Sterling calls the loans.”
“How much does Mom owe now?”
“Sixty-eight million.”
Daniel laughed in disbelief.
“She was willing to sacrifice the entire company.”
“She believed she could control the combined board.”
“And the Varenne defense contract?”
Charles looked confused.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel believed him.
That frightened him.
If Charles did not know, Evelyn had gone further than even her husband understood.
The office door opened.
Evelyn stood there.
She had heard enough.
“You weak little man.”
Charles looked at her.
For once, he did not look away.
“You destroyed our children.”
“I protected them.”
“You used them.”
“I built everything they have.”
Charles stood.
“My father built it.”
Evelyn’s face tightened.
Charles took a step toward her.
“And you spent thirty years convincing us survival depended on keeping you happy.”
No one moved.
Then Evelyn smiled.
“You think Daniel can save this company?”
“I think Daniel can survive losing it.”
That answer shook her.
Because Evelyn’s greatest weapon had always been fear of losing the Hawthorne name.
Daniel no longer looked afraid.
He picked up the ledger.
“This goes to federal investigators.”
Evelyn’s face changed.
“Daniel.”
“You told me family protects family.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked at Sophie.
Then his father.
Then his mother.
“I’m finally going to.”
He walked toward the door.
Evelyn spoke behind him.
“If you hand them that book, I will make sure Helena loses her throne.”
Daniel stopped.
Very slowly, he turned.
Evelyn smiled.
“You still don’t understand.”
She opened her purse.
May you like
Inside was another file.
“The Hawthornes are not the only family with secrets.”
