Chapter 19 - GUILTY

The jury returned after two days.
Financial fraud.
Guilty.
Conspiracy.
Guilty.
Forgery-related counts.
Guilty.
Unlawful surveillance.
Guilty.
Evidence tampering.
Guilty.
Charges connected to Malcolm’s abduction.
Guilty.
Domestic assault counts.
Guilty on multiple charges.
Not every count.
Enough.
Adrian closed his eyes.
I did not smile.
My father squeezed my hand.
My mother sat on the other side.
Serena sat behind us.
Margaret had already entered a plea in exchange for testimony and faced her own sentence.
Malcolm would never be innocent.
He admitted what he did.
He would also face consequences.
There were no clean heroes.
Only truth divided into degrees of responsibility.
At sentencing, Adrian asked to speak.
The judge allowed it.
He turned toward me.
“Claire.”
I felt nothing.
“I loved you.”
The courtroom became silent.
He continued.
“I know no one believes that.”
I looked at him.
“I do.”
His face changed.
I stood when permitted to give my statement.
“I believe you loved me in the only way you understood love.”
His eyes filled.
“You loved access.”
“Control.”
“Obedience.”
“You loved knowing I would explain your behavior before anyone asked.”
He looked down.
“But love that requires fear is not love I am required to honor.”
I sat.
Adrian received a long prison sentence across the combined convictions.
Years.
Enough that the exact number mattered less than the certainty.
He would not come home.
Not tonight.
Not tomorrow.
Not after an apology.
The mansion would not wait for his footsteps.
Outside court, reporters shouted.
I walked past them.
Then my father said something.
“Cake?”
I stared at him.
“What?”
He smiled.
“Your birthday never got properly finished.”
My mother laughed.
Serena laughed too.
I did not.
Then I did.
For several minutes, four damaged people stood outside a courthouse laughing about a cake.
It felt ridiculous.
It felt wonderful.
That night, we returned to the mansion.

The doors unlocked.
No one flinched.
