Chapter 14 - THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE HOUSE

The person leaking information to Adrian was my father.

Not intentionally.

His new driver was.

A man named Eric Shaw had been hired through a security company.

He reported our movements to Margaret’s attorney.

Then information reached Adrian.

Investigators discovered it when Eric attempted to photograph a protected document.

My father blamed himself.

“You trusted a professional security service.”

I told him.

“I should have checked.”

“You are not responsible for everyone who lies to you.”

The sentence surprised me.

Because I was also saying it to myself.

Eric cooperated.

Adrian paid him through an intermediary.

The most important information Eric delivered was my temporary location.

That terrified everyone.

Security moved me that night.

My mother came with me.

My father went somewhere else.

Serena entered witness protection temporarily.

Adrian had not violated the protective order directly.

He had simply paid someone to track me.

Again.

Always watching.

Always controlling.

Then Eric revealed one final request.

Adrian wanted to know when my mother would meet Malcolm.

Why?

No one knew.

Until Malcolm disappeared from the rehabilitation facility.

He was taken during a medical transfer.

The ambulance was fake.

Two employees had been bribed.

The building cameras captured everything.

Adrian’s attorney claimed no knowledge.

No one believed him.

Malcolm was now the most important witness in the financial case.

And he was gone.

Daniel Reed looked at me.

“Adrian is cornered.”

“What happens when someone like him is cornered?”

“He tries to make the problem smaller.”

My mother understood.

“He’ll silence Malcolm.”

The search lasted eighteen hours.

Then Serena remembered a place from childhood.

An abandoned Vale hunting lodge near the state line.

Agents surrounded it.

Malcolm was inside.

Alive.

So was Adrian.

He had one bag packed.

Cash.

Passport.

Documents.

No weapon in his hands when agents entered.

No dramatic shootout.

No heroic escape.

Only a man discovering money could not unlock a federal perimeter.

Adrian was arrested.

As he was taken outside, he saw me standing behind a vehicle.

His face changed.

“Claire.”

I said nothing.

“You don’t understand.”

I almost laughed.

For years, those three words controlled entire conversations.

Now they sounded pathetic.

He raised his voice.

“I did everything for us.”

I finally answered.

“There was never an us.”

Agents placed him in the vehicle.

May you like

The door closed.

And for the first time since I married him, I watched Adrian leave without wondering when he would come back.
