Chapter 13 - THE MISSING WOMAN

Margaret requested a private meeting with prosecutors.
She wanted a deal.
Daniel refused immunity.
She offered information anyway.
“There is another woman.”
My stomach tightened.
“What woman?”
A former Vale accountant named Anna Pierce.
She disappeared twelve years earlier.
Officially, she moved abroad.
She had actually discovered Malcolm and Adrian’s early accounts.
Adrian paid her to leave.
Then Margaret lost contact with her.
“Alive?”
Daniel asked.
Margaret looked uncertain.
“I don’t know.”
Records showed Anna never used her passport after the supposed move.
Her bank account stopped activity one month later.
Then a property connected to Adrian appeared.
A farmhouse in northern Vermont.
Federal agents searched it.
No Anna.
But they found boxes of old financial records.
And one wall covered with photographs.
My mother.
My father.
Malcolm.
Me.
Serena.
Anna Pierce.
Adrian had tracked everyone.
At the center was a handwritten diagram.
BENNETT CONTROL.
Arrows connected people to weaknesses.
ROBERT - GRIEF.
ELEANOR - GUILT.
MALCOLM - CRIMINAL EXPOSURE.
SERENA - FAMILY LOYALTY.
CLAIRE - LOVE.
I stared at my name.
Love.
That was what Adrian believed made me controllable.
He was right for years.
I loved him.
I wanted the marriage to work.
I explained bruises.
Forgave apologies.
Accepted flowers.
Repeated his excuses to myself.
Love did make me vulnerable.
But he misunderstood one thing.
Love was not the same as stupidity.
Once I understood what he had done, love stopped protecting him.
Then investigators found a second word beneath my name.
CHILD.
I stopped breathing.
“I don’t have children.”
My mother looked at me.
No one spoke.
I had miscarried two pregnancies during our marriage.
The first at ten weeks.
The second at thirteen.
Adrian had been strangely detached both times.
My skin went cold.
“What does child mean?”
Daniel did not speculate.
He ordered additional searches.
In Adrian’s private files, investigators found fertility records.
Mine.
Without my permission.
Adrian had been monitoring my pregnancies more closely than I knew.
A physician connected to his company had received updates.
Nothing immediately suggested deliberate harm.
But one note stood out.
Pregnancy complicates timing.
Delay incapacity strategy until resolved.
I stared at it.
My unborn children had been treated as obstacles in a financial plan.
I closed the file.
Then something inside me changed.
Until that moment, part of me still wanted Adrian to explain himself.

After that page, I never wanted an explanation again.
I wanted consequences.
