Chapter 19 - SARAH’S DECISION

The next morning, the Vance board gathered again.

This time Victoria’s chair was empty.

Marcus attended only long enough to submit his resignation and cooperate with investigators.

Daniel Cross provided a sworn statement.

The forensic report confirmed the signatures were forged.

The merger died unanimously.

Then the attorneys turned to Sarah.

A thick document sat before her.

Acceptance of Guardianship Proxy.

One signature would give her control of Leo’s eighteen percent.

Reporters were waiting downstairs.

Executives were waiting for her decision.

Julian was sitting beside her.

Sarah stared at the pen.

Five years earlier, powerful people had made decisions about her life without asking.

Now every person in the room was waiting for her permission.

She looked at the board.

“I have conditions.”

Nobody interrupted.

“Leo’s shares will not be used to enrich me.”

“They will remain entirely protected for him.”

The attorneys nodded.

“I want an independent trust administrator.”

Another nod.

“I want full funding for employee childcare across every Vance property.”

Several directors exchanged looks.

Sarah continued.

“And no staff member at any Vance event will ever be forced to entertain guests outside the duties they agreed to perform.”

Julian smiled faintly.

That rule was for the woman Victoria had ordered to dance.

Sarah looked at him.

“One more condition.”

“Name it.”

“You do not get automatic access to Leo because you are wealthy or because DNA says you’re his father.”

The room became silent.

“You earn his trust.”

“You show up.”

“You learn his schedule.”

“You learn what he eats.”

“You sit through preschool performances.”

“You pick him up when he is sick.”

“You become his father through actions.”

Julian’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Sarah signed.

At that exact moment, Leo’s trust became active.

Eighteen percent of Vance International shifted into his name.

Sterling Holdings officially lost the leverage it had spent five years trying to protect.

But Sarah did something nobody expected.

She refused a seat on the Vance board.

“I spent years building a life where nobody owned me.”

she told Julian.

“I’m not replacing one dependency with another.”

“What will you do?”

“I still like events.”

Julian smiled.

“You were always better at them than half my executives.”

Sarah raised an eyebrow.

“So you remember.”

“I remember everything.”

She eventually accepted a position with an independent nonprofit that organized fundraising events for childcare programs.

Not because Julian gave it to her.

Because she applied.

Interviewed.

And earned it.

That evening, they returned to the estate.

Leo ran toward them.

“Did Mommy win?”

Sarah crouched.

“No.”

Leo frowned.

Julian crouched beside her.

“We all got something better.”

“What?”

Julian looked at Sarah.

“The truth.”

Leo seemed disappointed.

“Does truth have cake?”

Sarah laughed.

“It can.”

They celebrated his approaching fifth birthday with chocolate cake in the kitchen.

No ballroom.

No reporters.

No expensive guests.

Just Leo.

Sarah.

Julian.

And Mrs. Alvarez secretly putting extra frosting on Leo’s plate.

For the first time, Sarah believed the nightmare might actually be ending.

Then Julian handed her one final envelope.

It had arrived from the evidence department that afternoon.

The handwriting belonged to Sarah’s late mother.

And on the front were four words.

FOR SARAH AND JULIAN.

May you like

Together.
