Chapter 15 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING COLLAPSED

By sunset, Julian had been temporarily suspended as chairman.

The board called it a precaution.

Victoria called it justice.

The media called it chaos.

Sterling Holdings shares crashed.

Vance shares followed.

Sarah watched financial commentators discuss her as though she were a weapon.

Some called her a victim.

Others called her a con artist.

None knew her.

Julian returned to the estate exhausted.

Sarah found him alone in the ballroom.

The same room where everything began.

He was staring at the spot where Victoria had thrown money at Sarah’s feet.

“I should have seen her.”

he said.

Sarah leaned against the doorway.

“You saw what she wanted you to see.”

“I trusted her.”

“So did everyone.”

“I trusted Marcus.”

Sarah said nothing.

Julian looked at her.

“And you paid for it.”

“So did Leo.”

The words were painful because they were true.

Julian sat.

“I missed his first word.”

Sarah’s anger softened.

“Train.”

Julian looked up.

“His first word?”

She nodded.

“Train.”

Julian laughed weakly.

“Of course it was.”

Sarah sat several feet away.

For the first time, they spoke about Leo instead of evidence.

His first steps.

His obsession with peanut butter sandwiches.

His fear of thunderstorms.

His habit of sleeping with one sock missing.

Julian listened to everything.

Then Leo appeared at the ballroom door.

“Mommy?”

Sarah smiled.

“What are you doing awake?”

Leo held the silver train necklace.

“It broke.”

Julian took it.

The chain had separated from the pendant.

He examined the tiny train beneath the chandelier.

Then he frowned.

“There’s something inside it.”

Sarah stared.

“What?”

Julian pressed the base.

A tiny panel opened.

Inside was a folded strip of paper.

Sarah laughed in disbelief.

“I never knew that opened.”

Julian remembered.

“I put a note inside when I gave it to you.”

“You did?”

He unfolded it.

The ink was faded.

The message was simple.

IF YOU EVER NEED ME, ROOM 814.

SARAH KNOWS WHY.

Sarah stared at it.

Then she remembered.

Room 814.

The hotel room where Julian had first told her he loved her.

But something else happened there.

Julian had once shown Sarah an old-fashioned wall safe he used for personal documents.

After their relationship ended, the hotel had been renovated.

Sarah looked at him.

“Does room 814 still exist?”

Julian grabbed his phone.

“It does.”

Forty minutes later, they entered Grand Vance Chicago.

The suite had changed.

The wall safe had not.

Julian opened it with an emergency master code.

Inside was one forgotten envelope.

Sarah recognized her handwriting immediately.

It was the original pregnancy letter.

The one Victoria had apparently never found.

And attached to it was an internal hotel receipt showing exactly who had opened the safe five years earlier.

May you like

Victoria Sterling.
