Chapter 16 - THE RECEIPT VICTORIA COULDN’T ERASE
The receipt changed everything.
It was digitally timestamped.
Victoria had accessed Room 814 three days after Sarah left her pregnancy letter at the hotel.
The safe system recorded her employee authorization card.
She had no legitimate reason to enter the suite.
Julian’s attorneys immediately filed the evidence with the court.
But Sarah kept staring at the original letter.
Five years earlier, she had written it while sitting on the bathroom floor of her apartment.
Julian,
I don’t know whether you will be happy or afraid.
I am both.
I’m pregnant.
I am not asking you for anything.
I only need you to know because this baby deserves two parents who at least had the chance to choose.
Sarah stopped reading.
Her eyes filled.
Julian stood beside her.
“You gave me that chance.”
“I never saw it.”
She nodded.
For years she had carried anger toward him.
Some of it remained.
But now the shape of it had changed.
The person she had hated had never actually existed.
Julian touched the edge of the letter.
“I wish I had found this.”
“So do I.”
There was nothing romantic about the moment.
It was grief.
Grief for birthdays.
For missed nights.
For a little boy who had spent four years asking questions Sarah could not answer.
Then Julian’s attorney called.
The court had issued a temporary injunction.
The merger was blocked.
Leo’s trust claim would be formally reviewed.
Victoria had lost her immediate path to control.
Julian exhaled.
“It’s over.”
Sarah looked at him.
“No.”
She had learned too much about Victoria to believe that.
Minutes later, they discovered she was right.
Daniel Cross finally called.
His voice trembled.
“I’m sorry.”
“Where are you?”
Julian demanded.
“I left because Victoria threatened my daughter.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
“Do you have the original files?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Victoria has them now.”
Julian swore.
Daniel continued.
“She contacted me before the board meeting.”
“She said if I gave her the files, she would leave my family alone.”
“What was in them?”
Sarah asked.
Daniel breathed heavily.
“Payment records.”
“Hospital records.”
“Arthur Sterling’s instructions.”
“And one recording.”
Julian went still.
“What recording?”
“A meeting between Arthur, Victoria, and Marcus.”
“Victoria admits exactly why Leo had to remain hidden.”
Sarah gripped the phone.
“Where is it?”
Daniel whispered.
“Victoria took everything to Sterling House.”
Then another voice appeared in the background.
A door opening.
Daniel stopped speaking.
“Mr. Cross?”
Sarah said.
Nothing.
Then the call ended.
Ten seconds later, Sarah received a photograph.
Victoria standing beside a fireplace.
The original files were stacked in front of her.
The message beneath the photograph contained one sentence.
