Chapter 3: Victoria’s Real Game

Ethan felt the floor shift beneath him.

“That’s impossible,” he said.

Daniel slid a report across the desk.

Victoria Brooks had been negotiating secretly with Carter Industries for months. She wanted Daniel’s investment to rescue the Brooks family company from collapse.

But Daniel had refused.

Not because the business was weak.

Because Victoria was dishonest.

“She discovered Emma was my daughter two weeks ago,” Daniel said. “She believed if she destroyed Emma publicly, Emma would hide from the scandal. Then your family could claim she deceived you and pressure me privately.”

Ethan’s face went pale.

“My mother planned this?”

“She staged it.”

Ethan stood there, breathing hard, the shame turning into something sharper.

For the first time in his life, he saw Victoria clearly.

Not as a difficult mother.

Not as a proud woman.

As someone willing to destroy the woman he loved to save her own empire.

That evening, Victoria called a private family meeting at the Brooks estate. She expected Ethan to apologize to her. She expected him to come home obedient, embarrassed, easy to control.

Instead, Ethan walked in with Daniel Carter beside him.

Emma came last.

The room went silent.

Victoria’s smile disappeared.

“Emma,” Ethan said, turning to face her in front of everyone. “I failed you when you needed me most.”

His voice shook, but he did not look away.

“I was afraid of my mother. I was afraid of losing my family. But none of that excuses what I did.”

Victoria stepped forward. “Ethan, stop this nonsense.”

He turned to her.

“No.”

One word.

Quiet.

Final.

Victoria froze.

Ethan removed his phone from his pocket and played the recording Daniel’s investigator had found: Victoria’s voice, cold and clear, ordering the humiliation at the reception.

Emma covered her mouth.

The Brooks relatives stared in horror.

Victoria’s power drained from the room in seconds.

Ethan looked back at Emma.

“I should have protected you then,” he said. “I’m protecting you now. Even if it means losing everything.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

But this time, she did not run to him.

She simply whispered, “I needed that yesterday.”

And Ethan understood.

Some courage arrives too late to erase the wound.
