Chapter 2: The Truth at Carter House

Carter House sat on a private hill overlooking the city, all glass walls, white stone, and quiet power.
Emma had grown up there.
But that night, it felt less like home and more like a courtroom.
Daniel poured her a cup of tea and set it in front of her without saying a word. He had always known when silence helped more than advice.
Emma stared at the ring on her finger.
“I didn’t tell him because I wanted one person to love me before they loved my last name,” she whispered.
Daniel sat across from her.
“And did he?”
Emma’s lips trembled.
“I think he did.”
“That isn’t the question anymore.”
She looked up.
Daniel’s voice was gentle. “The question is whether he loves you enough to become brave.”
Across town, Ethan was asking himself the same thing.
He sat alone in his apartment, still wearing his tuxedo. His phone had thirty missed calls from Victoria and none from Emma.
Then a message appeared.
It was from Daniel Carter.
Come tomorrow morning. Alone.
Ethan barely slept.
At nine the next morning, he entered Carter House through the front gates. He expected lawyers. Threats. Maybe security waiting to throw him out.
Instead, Daniel was standing in his study.
Emma was not there.
Daniel placed a folder on the desk.
Inside were photos from the reception. Victoria humiliating Emma. Ethan standing in the background, motionless.
Ethan looked away.
Daniel did not let him.
“You want to marry my daughter,” Daniel said. “But marriage is not standing beside a woman when it is convenient. It is standing beside her when the entire room turns against her.”
Ethan swallowed hard.
“I know.”
“No,” Daniel said. “You regret. That is not the same as knowing.”
For the first time, Ethan had no defense.
Then Daniel opened another folder.
It contained business documents, contracts, and financial records linked to the Brooks family company.
Ethan frowned.
“What is this?”
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“Your mother didn’t humiliate Emma because she thought Emma was poor.”
May you like
He paused.
“She humiliated her because she already knew exactly who Emma was.”
