Chapter 1: The Jacket Around Her Shoulders

The ballroom remained silent long after Daniel Carter placed his jacket around Emma’s shoulders.

No one moved.

No one dared to breathe too loudly.

Victoria Brooks stood near the champagne tower, her face still sharp with pride, but her eyes had changed. She had humiliated many people in her life. Assistants. Servants. Women she believed were beneath her son.

But she had never humiliated Daniel Carter’s daughter.

Emma kept her chin lifted, though her hands trembled beneath her father’s jacket. She could still hear Victoria’s words echoing in her head.

“You should be grateful Ethan chose you. Girls like you don’t marry into families like ours.”

Girls like you.

Emma had smiled through the first insult.

She had stayed quiet through the second.

But when Victoria spilled red wine across her dress and called it “a useful reminder of where Emma belonged,” something inside her broke.

And Ethan had stood there.

Silent.

Daniel looked at Ethan now, not with anger, but with disappointment so deep it was almost worse.

“I didn’t stop it,” Ethan admitted.

Daniel nodded slowly.

“That may be harder for her to forgive.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Ethan stepped forward. “Emma, please. I was trying not to make things worse.”

She looked at him.

“You didn’t make things worse, Ethan,” she said softly. “You made me stand alone.”

Those words hit harder than any scream.

Victoria finally found her voice. “This is absurd. She lied about who she was.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“No,” he said calmly. “She waited to see who you were.”

The entire room froze.

Then Daniel offered Emma his arm.

This time, she took it.

And as father and daughter walked out of the ballroom, Ethan realized the engagement ring on Emma’s finger suddenly looked less like a promise…

And more like a question.
