CHAPTER 5 — THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH

Daniel finally sat down.

Slowly.

Like the weight of everything had become physical.

“I moved it,” he admitted. “Not all of it… but enough.”

Grace didn’t interrupt.

Arthur didn’t either.

Daniel continued.

“I thought I could rebuild. Fix everything before anyone noticed. Before you got hurt.”

He looked at Grace.

“But I underestimated how fast truth spreads when someone else takes the blame for you.”

Silence again.

Then Evelyn spoke softly.

“So what happens now?”

Arthur answered.

“Now? The truth becomes public record.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Grace looked down at Lily, then back at him.

“No,” she said quietly.

Everyone turned.

Grace continued:

“Now you don’t disappear from the truth.”

A long pause.

Then she added:

“You live with it.”

ENDING

The baby monitor on the table finally shut off.

Not because it was turned off.

But because the recording ended.

May you like

And for the first time—

There was nothing left to replay.
