Chapter 19 - THE ORIGINAL TRAITOR

Rebecca refused to believe it.
“My father died in Vietnam.”
Eleanor laughed.
“That was the first identity he buried.”
Arthur looked stunned.
“You never told me.”
“You never asked the correct question.”
Thomas pulled a chair toward Eleanor.
“Where is Jonathan Lane?”
She smiled.
“You still think this is an interrogation.”
“You’re in handcuffs.”
“And yet the most important person in your case just erased his name from your evidence.”
Thomas leaned closer.
“Then help us find him.”
“Why would I?”
Sarah answered.
“Because if he is still running this, you’re disposable too.”
For the first time, Eleanor stopped smiling.
Sarah saw it.
So did Rebecca.
“He abandoned you.”
Eleanor said nothing.
Sarah continued.
“You came here personally because you thought you were still in control.”
“But he let you walk into a trap.”
“He erased himself.”
“Not you.”
Eleanor’s eyes hardened.
Rebecca stepped closer.
“You protected him your whole life.”
“He just sacrificed you.”
That broke something.
Not much.
Just enough.
Eleanor whispered an address.
“Virginia.”
Maya immediately sent it to federal teams.
The address belonged to a private assisted-living estate near Charlottesville.
Registered under another shell corporation.
Thomas asked,
“What name does he use?”
Eleanor looked at Rebecca.
“Dr. John Lane.”
Rebecca nearly laughed.
“He kept his own name?”
“Parts of it.”
Federal agents reached the estate before dawn.
Jonathan Lane was not there.
His room had been emptied.
But investigators found photographs.
Sarah.
Thomas.
Lucy.
Rebecca.
Emily.
Even Evan.
The Circle had been watching everyone.
A map on the wall marked hospitals in fourteen states.
Thomas stared at the images sent to Maya’s laptop.
“This is bigger than Connecticut.”
Maya nodded.
“Much bigger.”
Then investigators found a video recorded hours earlier.
Jonathan Lane appeared on screen.
He was in his eighties.
Sharp-eyed.
Calm.
“Rebecca.”
Her father looked directly into the camera.
“You always were the difficult child.”
Rebecca’s hands shook.
Jonathan continued.
“Sarah has inherited that.”
“And apparently Lucy will too.”
Sarah felt rage.
He knew her daughter’s name.
“You will hear people call what we built criminal.”
“Perhaps parts of it became so.”
“But governments fail.”
“Courts fail.”
“Families fail.”
“We created a system that could move people beyond all of them.”
Rebecca whispered.
“You stole babies.”
Jonathan continued.
“Sometimes history requires unpleasant choices.”
Then he leaned closer.
“If Thomas is watching, ask Arthur why he truly joined Veil.”
Thomas slowly turned toward his father.
Arthur’s face emptied.
The recording ended.
Silence filled the room.
Thomas spoke.
“What does that mean?”
Arthur looked away.
“Dad.”
Still nothing.
Rebecca whispered.
“Arthur.”
He finally spoke.
“I didn’t join Veil to protect witnesses.”
Thomas stared.
“Then why?”
Arthur looked at Sarah.
“Twenty-five years ago, I was sent there to find Rebecca.”
Sarah’s heart dropped.
“By whom?”
Arthur swallowed.
“Jonathan Lane.”
Thomas stepped backward.
His father had hidden his mother.
Protected Sarah.
Faked his death.
Saved the archive.
But before all of that, Arthur Hale had entered Veil House working for the very man they were now hunting.
The traitor had not been one person.
It had been a chain.
May you like
And another link had just been exposed.
