Chapter 17 - THE WOMAN WHO BUILT THE CIRCLE

Eleanor entered Veil House as though she still owned every floorboard.

Maybe she did.

Sarah stood in the main hall beside Rebecca.

Hidden cameras transmitted to Maya.

Price locked the front door.

Keene looked nervous.

Crane looked furious.

Eleanor looked calm.

“Where is the infant?”

Sarah said nothing.

Eleanor smiled.

“Good.”

“You learned something from your mother after all.”

Rebecca stepped forward.

“This ends tonight.”

“You said that twenty-three years ago.”

Eleanor removed her gloves.

Her hands were thin.

Steady.

“You never understood what Veil was.”

Rebecca’s voice shook with anger.

“You stole children.”

“I saved children.”

“You sold identities.”

“I created futures.”

“You killed witnesses.”

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“Some people could not be allowed to destroy the structure protecting hundreds.”

Thomas listened from above.

Maya recorded everything.

Sarah asked,

“Why Lucy?”

Eleanor finally gave the answer Sarah had chased through fire, forests, basements, and lies.

“Because your daughter completes Rebecca’s legal chain.”

“Once Monday arrives, courts can authenticate the original archive.”

“Every placement becomes reviewable.”

“Every official connected to it becomes exposed.”

Sarah stared.

“So you wanted to steal Lucy.”

“No.”

Eleanor smiled.

“I wanted to make her disappear.”

Rebecca moved toward her.

Price raised his gun.

Sarah didn’t flinch.

“You can’t erase us anymore.”

Eleanor tilted her head.

“I erased Thomas’s mother for thirty-one years.”

Thomas nearly moved.

Arthur whispered through the earpiece.

“Don’t.”

Sarah forced herself to remain calm.

“Where is Laura?”

Eleanor looked toward the ceiling.

“So he really is listening.”

Everyone froze.

She knew.

Price reached toward his radio.

Evan cut the building’s communication jammer.

Maya’s stream continued through a hidden hardline.

Eleanor called out.

“Thomas.”

“Come meet your mother’s sister.”

Thomas stepped onto the upstairs landing.

Eleanor looked at him.

“You have Malcolm’s eyes.”

Thomas’s face hardened.

“You kept my mother prisoner.”

“Your mother volunteered at first.”

Arthur appeared from the basement doorway.

Eleanor finally lost some of her calm.

“Arthur.”

“You look disappointed.”

“You were always sentimental.”

Arthur looked at Thomas.

“Where is Laura?”

Eleanor smiled again.

“Closer than you think.”

A door opened behind the staircase.

Captain Price pulled a woman forward.

Older.

Fragile.

But Thomas recognized her before anyone spoke.

Laura Hale.

His mother.

Thomas stopped breathing.

Laura looked up.

“Tommy?”

The weapon in Thomas’s hand lowered.

That was the moment Price had been waiting for.

He aimed at Thomas.

Evan stepped from the shadows.

“Don’t.”

Price turned.

For twelve years, Thomas had believed Evan Mercer was the man beside him.

Then he had believed Evan was the traitor.

Now Evan stood between him and the bullet.

Outside, sirens erupted.

Eleanor’s face changed.

Maya’s voice came through Thomas’s earpiece.

“Stream confirmed.”

“State attorney has it.”

“Federal inspector general has it.”

“Media escrow has it.”

Sarah looked directly at Eleanor.

“You built a system around silence.”

May you like

“Tonight you talked too much.”
