Chapter 18 - THE FALSE ENDING

Police surrounded Veil House.
Not county officers.
State tactical units from outside Price’s command.
Federal investigators from an inspector-general team Reese had contacted before his death.
Captain Price surrendered first.
Judge Keene tried to escape through the kitchen.
He found Evan waiting.
Senator Crane demanded an attorney before anyone asked him a question.
Eleanor remained standing in the foyer.
Unmoved.
“You think arrests end institutions?”
Sarah answered.
“No.”
“Evidence does.”
Arthur handed investigators Voss’s drive.
Rebecca surrendered the microSD archive.
Maya transmitted the Hawthorne records.
Olivia gave prosecutors her father’s financial files.
Kara agreed to testify.
For several hours, Veil House became the center of the largest law-enforcement scandal in the state’s history.
Then Thomas finally sat beside Laura.
His mother touched his face.
“I knew you’d become a policeman.”
Thomas was crying openly.
“You knew?”
“Eleanor showed me newspaper clippings.”
“Why didn’t you escape?”
“I tried.”
Laura looked toward Eleanor in the distance.
“They threatened you.”
“Then Arthur.”
“Every time I tried, somebody I loved became the price.”
Arthur knelt beside her.
For thirty-one years, he had believed his wife dead.
Neither seemed to know what to say.
They simply held hands.
Sarah thought the nightmare was ending.
Then Maya entered.
Her face was wrong.
“What happened?”
“The Voss drive.”
“What?”
“One directory erased itself.”
Thomas stood.
“Which directory?”
“Command structure.”
Arthur stared at Eleanor.
Eleanor smiled from across the room.
“You should listen to her.”
Maya continued.
“The deletion happened remotely twelve minutes ago.”
“After Eleanor was already in custody.”
Sarah felt hope drain from her.
“Someone else has access.”
Eleanor laughed softly.
“You thought I created the Circle?”
Arthur stared.
“You did.”
“No.”
“I preserved it.”
Rebecca whispered.
“Who created it?”
Eleanor looked toward Sarah.
“My husband.”
“Richard Vale?”
“No.”
Eleanor smiled.
“The man everyone knew as Richard Vale was never my husband.”
“He was another identity.”
Thomas stepped closer.
“Whose?”
Eleanor said one name.
“Jonathan Lane.”
Rebecca went white.
“My father?”
Sarah stared at her mother.
Rebecca’s father had supposedly died before she was born.
Eleanor nodded.
“Your father created the first Veil network.”
“And if the command directory just erased itself…”
She looked directly into the nearest camera.
May you like
“…then Jonathan is still alive.”
