Chapter 2 - THE MAN WHO TRIED TO LEAVE

Every eye in the ballroom turned toward Senator Conrad Vaughn.
He stopped beside the locked service door.
His wife stood near the merger display, visibly confused.
Victoria moved quickly between him and Colonel Vance.
“Conrad has an important call.”
“No one leaves,” Vance repeated.
“This is still my event,” Victoria snapped.
“No.”
Vance held up Maya’s medal.
“This became a federal matter the moment that insignia touched the floor.”
Senator Vaughn adjusted his cuff links.
His movements were controlled.
But sweat had appeared along his forehead.
“This is ridiculous.”
“General Cross died years ago.”
Vance’s gaze sharpened.
“How would you know?”
“It was public knowledge.”
“The public was told he disappeared.”
Vaughn said nothing.
Maya shifted her daughter against her shoulder.
The baby’s crying had softened into frightened whimpers.
Ethan finally approached them.
“Maya, let me hold Rose.”
She stepped away.
His hands stopped in the air.
“You watched your mother slap me.”
“I was shocked.”
“You have been shocked for three years.”
Her words struck harder than a shout.
Ethan looked toward the guests.
His humiliation still mattered more to him than her pain.
Vance removed his phone.
“I am contacting the military inspector general.”
Victoria grabbed his wrist.
“You will not destroy this merger over an orphan’s fantasy.”
Vance looked down at her hand.
Victoria immediately released him.
“Maya is not an orphan,” he said.
“And if I am correct, she may own more of the company you are celebrating tonight than anyone in this room.”
Victoria’s face went blank.
The merger involved Sterling Holdings and Vaughn Strategic Industries.
Vaughn Strategic had acquired several defense patents once owned by Cross Aeronautics.
The Cross family disappeared before contesting the sale.
Without an heir, those patents passed through a government liquidation process.
Senator Vaughn built his fortune from them.
Maya stared at him.
“What does that have to do with me?”
Vance turned toward her.
“General Cross founded Cross Aeronautics.”
“He placed controlling ownership in a family trust.”
“The trust belonged to his daughter, Dr. Evelyn Cross.”
“Your mother.”
Maya almost stopped breathing.
“You knew her?”
“She was my goddaughter.”
The words landed gently.
But they changed everything.
Vance’s voice weakened.
“I held you the day you were born.”
Maya looked down at Rose.
Then back at him.
“What was my name?”
He smiled through tears.
“Amelia Evelyn Cross.”
Across the room, Senator Vaughn whispered something to Victoria.
Maya saw it.
So did Vance.
Before either could move, the banquet hall lights went out.
A scream rose from the darkness.
Then came the sound of breaking glass.
May you like
When the emergency lights turned on, Senator Vaughn was gone.
And Maya’s medal had disappeared from Vance’s hand.
