Chapter 17 - THE BROTHERS
Colonel Vance entered the facility alone.
Agent Brooks shouted for him to stop.
He continued through the doorway with both hands raised.
Matthew stared at his twin brother.
Age had changed them differently.
But the resemblance remained undeniable.
“You always had to be the hero,” Matthew said.
“No.”
Vance looked at the device beneath his brother’s jacket.
“I was the one who survived.”
Vaughn ordered him to remove his weapon.
Vance placed it on the floor.
Nathan remained beneath the stairwell with Rose.
Maya watched the live feed from the command vehicle.
Her daughter’s cries filled the speakers.
Ethan stood beside her.
His uninjured hand gripped the edge of the console.
Vaughn held the trigger.
“Bring me Amelia.”
Vance shook his head.
“She is not part of this exchange.”
“She is the only part that matters.”
Maya reached for the vehicle door.
Agent Brooks blocked her.
“No.”
“He will kill Rose.”
“He may kill everyone if you enter.”
Ethan looked at Maya.
Then he removed the Sterling family signet ring from his finger.
He handed it to Agent Brooks.
“The vault files show my father built the explosive control system.”
“The ring may contain an override chip.”
Brooks examined it.
A technician confirmed a hidden transmitter inside the metal.
Charles Sterling had carried an emergency override without telling Vaughn.
Ethan had inherited the ring.
The technician needed thirty seconds close to the device.
Vance had to activate it manually.
Agent Brooks spoke through his hidden earpiece.
Vance looked toward Ethan’s ring on the floor beside his weapon.
He understood.
He moved slowly.
Vaughn raised the trigger.
“What are you doing?”
“Looking at my brother.”
Vance stepped closer to Matthew.
Matthew’s eyes filled with tears.
“I changed the convoy route.”
“I know.”
“I helped hide Evelyn.”
“I know.”
“I thought I could leave.”
“I know.”
“You do not know.”
Matthew’s voice broke.
“Vaughn had my son.”
Vance froze.
Matthew had obeyed because Vaughn threatened a child Vance never knew existed.
The pattern had repeated across every family.
Vaughn used children to control parents.
Ethan’s life controlled Victoria.
Maya controlled Nathan.
Matthew’s son controlled him.
Vance reached for his brother’s shoulder.
His fingers touched the signet ring lying near Matthew’s boot.
The override activated.
The red light beneath Matthew’s collar turned green.
Agent Brooks shouted.
“Now.”
Federal agents stormed the facility.
Matthew tackled Vaughn.
The trigger fell.
Nathan ran toward the exit with Rose.
Gunfire exploded.
