Chapter 18 - THE CHOICE AT THE DOOR

Maya reached Nathan before the paramedics.
Rose was crying against his chest.
There was blood across the blanket.
Maya lifted her daughter.
Rose was uninjured.
The blood belonged to Nathan.
The bullet had entered beneath his ribs.
He looked up at Maya.
For the first time, she saw her own eyes in his face.
“You took her.”
“I moved her before Vaughn’s nurse could.”
“You should have called me.”
“I thought he was watching every line.”
“You have watched me for twenty-four years.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe I had no one.”
His breathing weakened.
“I did not deserve to call myself your father.”
“That was not your decision to make.”
Tears moved across his face.
“You sound like Evelyn.”
“Where were you when she needed you?”
“I tried to reach the desert house.”
“Charles found me.”
“He threatened you?”
“No.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“He offered me money.”
Maya felt something inside her go still.
“You accepted it.”
“For two years.”
“Then I understood they would never release her.”
“I began collecting evidence.”
“That evidence became the vault.”
Nathan had created the archive beneath Sterling Tower.
He had worked with Charles while secretly copying everything.
He gave the first access key to Ethan’s father.
He hid the second inside Maya’s medal.
“Why leave me beside the highway?”
“Victoria did.”
“I followed.”
“I wanted to take you.”
“But federal patrols arrived.”
“I thought the medal would identify you within hours.”
“It took twenty-four years.”
“I know.”
Paramedics placed oxygen over his face.
Maya did not know whether she hated him.
Loved him.
Or merely recognized him.
All three feelings seemed possible.
Across the facility, agents arrested Conrad Vaughn.
Matthew surrendered.
Colonel Vance stood beside his brother as the explosive vest was removed.
Ethan carried Rose toward the ambulance.
He did not assume Maya would trust him with her.
He asked first.
She nodded.
That small act mattered.
Nathan gripped Maya’s sleeve.
“Your mother.”
“What about her?”
“She knew Victoria would return.”
“She left something in the red blanket.”
The blanket had been recovered from Nathan’s house.
Agents unfolded it carefully.
Inside the silver stitching was a thin strip of fabric marked with numbers.
They matched offshore accounts containing the profits from stolen Cross patents.
The amount exceeded three billion dollars.
Maya stared at the figure.
Nathan whispered.
“Vaughn believes the money belongs to him.”
“Victoria believes it belongs to Sterling.”
“Who does it belong to?” Maya asked.
Nathan looked toward Rose.
May you like
“To the children whose families they destroyed.”
Then his heart monitor went flat.
