Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO ERASED ROSA

Ethan had spent most of his adult life believing his aunt saved the Caldwell empire.

After his mother died and his father became ill, Margaret Caldwell stepped into the company.

She became strategist.

Guardian.

Advisor.

Family.

When Ethan was twenty-five, she helped him survive the corporate crisis that nearly destroyed everything.

Four years earlier, when Rosa had disappeared from his life, Margaret had been the person standing closest to him.

Now another Margaret was telling Ethan the woman he trusted most had deliberately erased Rosa.

“That’s impossible.”

Ethan’s voice was flat.

Margaret Sloan opened the leather folder.

“I wish it were.”

Inside were photocopies.

Three handwritten letters.

Rosa recognized them immediately.

Her knees almost gave way.

“Oh my God.”

Ethan took the first page.

The date was four years earlier.

Rosa’s handwriting covered both sides.

Ethan read.

His eyes stopped midway down the page.

Then he looked at Rosa.

“You told me.”

She nodded, crying now.

“Yes.”

He looked back at the letter.

“I’m pregnant.”

Those two words had been written four years ago.

He had simply never received them.

Margaret Sloan handed him another document.

“This was the internal instruction sent to reception.”

Ethan read it aloud.

“Ms. Rosa Martinez is not to be admitted to any Caldwell property.”

“Any correspondence is to be forwarded directly to Margaret Caldwell.”

His face became expressionless.

That was worse than anger.

Rosa had seen that look in business magazines.

The look Ethan wore when someone was about to lose an empire.

“Where is my aunt?”

Thomas checked his phone.

“Geneva.”

“Bring her home.”

“Sir—”

“Today.”

Thomas nodded.

Margaret Sloan lowered her voice.

“There is more.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Of course there is.”

“Your aunt did not simply intercept Rosa’s letters.”

“She contacted Columbia.”

Rosa froze.

“What?”

Margaret opened another envelope.

“She spoke with someone on the donor board.”

“She implied your relationship with Ethan could create problems for future funding.”

Rosa stared at her.

“I lost my research placement.”

Margaret nodded sadly.

“I know.”

Rosa stepped backward.

For years, she had blamed herself.

She had believed her pregnancy changed everything.

That exhaustion damaged her grades.

That bad timing destroyed her academic future.

Now she understood.

Someone had quietly closed doors before she could reach them.

Ethan looked sick.

“What else?”

Margaret hesitated.

“I don’t know everything.”

“But I know why your aunt did it.”

Ethan waited.

“She believed Rosa was dangerous.”

Rosa gave a bitter laugh.

“I was twenty-four and pregnant.”

“Not dangerous to the company.”

Margaret looked at Ethan.

“Dangerous to the family plan.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“What family plan?”

Margaret Sloan looked toward the ring still sitting on the piano across the room.

“The Haynes family.”

Victoria.

Rosa’s eyes widened.

Margaret continued.

“Your father and Richard Haynes had discussed combining parts of their companies years ago.”

“After your father died, your aunt continued those conversations.”

“She believed a marriage between you and Victoria would stabilize the family holdings.”

Ethan stared at her.

“So she got rid of Rosa.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then a tiny voice came from the doorway.

“Ethan?”

Everyone turned.

Lily stood there holding Button.

Ethan’s expression changed instantly.

He walked toward her.

“What is it?”

“I hungry.”

Something almost absurdly normal about the request cut through the tension.

Ethan crouched.

“What would you like?”

“Pancakes.”

“It’s almost noon.”

Lily considered that.

Then shrugged.

“Still pancakes.”

Rosa covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.

Ethan nodded seriously.

“Pancakes it is.”

He lifted Lily carefully.

The little girl rested one hand on his shoulder.

Ethan looked at Rosa.

“After she eats, I want a DNA test.”

Rosa stiffened.

He immediately continued.

“Not because I doubt you.”

“Because I want legal proof no one can ever challenge.”

Rosa understood.

Especially now.

“All right.”

He nodded.

Then his phone vibrated.

Thomas looked at his own screen.

“Sir.”

Ethan turned.

“Your aunt’s plane is already in the air.”

“Good.”

“No.”

Thomas’s face tightened.

“She isn’t coming here.”

“Her jet filed a new flight plan thirty minutes ago.”

“Where?”

“Switzerland to Singapore.”

Ethan frowned.

“Why would she run?”

Margaret Sloan looked at the documents in her hands.

“Maybe because she knows what else is inside this folder.”

She pulled out one final page.

A transfer authorization.

Rosa saw Ethan’s signature.

Ethan stared at it.

“I never signed this.”

Thomas looked over his shoulder.

The authorization transferred thirty-six million dollars into a private family holding company.

A company controlled by Margaret Caldwell.

And one other person.

May you like

Victoria Haynes.
