Chapter 5 - VICTORIA'S FIRST LIE

By midnight, Rosa’s life had become public property.
Her name was everywhere.
Her university photographs appeared online.
Old classmates were interviewed.
Neighbors discovered reporters waiting outside their buildings.
Someone found a picture of Rosa holding newborn Lily outside a clinic.
Someone else posted Ethan’s estimated net worth.
Comment sections filled with accusations.
Gold digger.
Mistress.
Con artist.
Opportunist.
Some defended her.
Others demanded a DNA test.
Rosa stopped reading after five minutes.
Ethan did not.
He stood in the hospital corridor staring at his phone with cold concentration.
Victoria’s statement had spread everywhere.
She claimed Rosa had deliberately hidden Lily for years.
She claimed Rosa had brought the child into the mansion specifically to manipulate Ethan.
She claimed the security video had been taken out of context.
Most importantly, she claimed she had never pushed Lily.
Ethan called Thomas.
“Release the full footage.”
Rosa stepped toward him.
“No.”
He turned.
“She’s lying about what happened.”
“I know.”
“Then people should see the truth.”
“They will see my three-year-old daughter being pushed onto a marble floor millions of times.”
Ethan stopped.
Rosa’s voice shook.
“I will not turn her pain into evidence for strangers.”
He slowly lowered the phone.
“You’re right.”
The answer surprised her.
The Ethan she remembered had always fought problems directly.
Harder.
Faster.
With overwhelming force.
This Ethan seemed different.
Or maybe fatherhood had changed him in less than six hours.
“What do you want me to do?” he asked.
Rosa looked toward Lily’s room.
“Protect her.”
“That’s all.”
Ethan nodded.
“Then that’s what I’ll do.”
The next morning, Lily was discharged.
Outside the hospital waited at least thirty reporters.
Ethan’s security team created a path.
Rosa immediately pulled Lily’s hood up.
Ethan removed his suit jacket.
He held it around Lily like a shield.
“Mr. Caldwell!”
“Is the child yours?”
“Did you cheat on Victoria?”
“Did Rosa Martinez blackmail you?”
“Will there be a DNA test?”
Ethan stopped.
Rosa grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.”
But he gently removed her hand.
Then he turned toward the cameras.
“This child is three years old.”
His voice was quiet.
Every microphone moved closer.
“She is not a scandal.”
“She is not content.”
“She is not a headline.”
“She is a little girl who was injured yesterday.”
“My relationship with Ms. Martinez is private.”
“My former engagement is finished.”
“And anyone who follows, photographs, or harasses this child will deal with my attorneys.”
Then he opened the SUV door for Rosa.
The clip went viral before they reached the estate.
But something else was waiting for them.
A woman stood outside the mansion gates.
She was in her late sixties.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
An old leather folder held against her chest.
Thomas spoke to security.
Then approached Ethan.
“She says she worked for your father.”
Ethan frowned.
“My father has been dead eight years.”
“She says she was his executive assistant.”
The woman stepped closer.
Her eyes immediately found Rosa.
Then Lily.
She looked shocked.
“Oh, dear God.”
Ethan moved protectively toward his daughter.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Margaret Sloan.”
Ethan recognized it.
He had been twelve the last time he saw her.
His father’s assistant.
One of the few employees his mother had trusted.
Margaret looked at Rosa again.
“I saw your face on the news.”
Rosa felt uneasy.
“Why are you here?”
Margaret tightened her grip on the leather folder.
“Because four years ago, someone came to the Caldwell office asking for Ethan.”
Rosa’s heart stopped.
Margaret continued.
“A young woman.”
“Pregnant.”
“She left a letter.”
Ethan looked at Rosa.
Rosa looked at Margaret.
“I left three letters.”
Margaret nodded.
“I know.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“What happened to them?”
Margaret’s eyes filled with regret.
“They were intercepted.”
“By whom?”
Margaret looked toward the mansion.
Then she said the name Ethan never expected to hear.
“Your aunt.”
May you like
“Margaret Caldwell.”
