Chapter 13 - THE EMPTY CAR SEAT

Police arrived within eleven minutes.

Federal agents followed because of Margaret Caldwell’s ongoing investigation.

Every highway camera was checked.

Every airport alert activated.

Every private security contact Ethan had was called.

Rosa could barely stand.

Ethan held her shoulders.

“We’ll find her.”

Rosa pushed him away.

“You don’t know that.”

“We will.”

“You don’t know!”

Her voice broke.

Ethan did not argue.

He simply stood there and absorbed every word.

Because Rosa needed someone to blame.

And if blaming him kept her standing, he would accept it.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

The room went silent.

An agent signaled for Rosa to answer.

She did.

“Hello?”

Victoria’s voice came through.

“Rosa.”

Rosa stopped breathing.

“Where is my daughter?”

“Calm down.”

“WHERE IS SHE?”

Ethan grabbed the edge of the desk.

Victoria remained composed.

“Lily is fine.”

Rosa’s knees weakened.

“Let me hear her.”

A pause.

Then a tiny voice.

“Mama?”

Rosa covered her mouth.

“Baby.”

“Mama, Button home.”

“I know.”

“I want him.”

“I know, sweetheart.”

“Mama come get me?”

Rosa was crying openly now.

“Yes.”

“Yes, baby.”

“I’m coming.”

The phone shifted.

Victoria returned.

“You have one hour.”

Ethan stepped toward the speaker.

“What do you want?”

Victoria laughed softly.

“Now he wants to talk.”

“Tell me what you want.”

“The codicil.”

Everyone looked at David Morris.

Victoria continued.

“The original.”

“You bring it personally.”

“No police.”

“No copies.”

“And Rosa comes with you.”

Ethan’s voice became cold.

“You harm Lily and—”

“You are not in a position to threaten me.”

The call ended.

Police began tracing.

Rosa turned toward Ethan.

“We give her the document.”

David shook his head.

“It will not matter.”

Rosa faced him.

“My daughter matters.”

“I mean Victoria cannot destroy its legal effect by destroying the paper.”

“I filed a certified copy this morning.”

Everyone stopped.

Ethan almost smiled.

“Does Victoria know?”

“No.”

“Good.”

The trace narrowed the call to an industrial area north of the city.

A warehouse owned by a Haynes subsidiary.

Police wanted time.

Ethan refused to risk it.

So did Rosa.

They drove to the location carrying the original codicil in a metal case.

Unmarked police vehicles remained several blocks away.

Ethan wore a concealed tracking device.

Rosa carried nothing.

They entered through a rusted side door.

The warehouse was almost empty.

Victoria stood beneath a hanging light.

Margaret Caldwell stood beside her.

Rosa’s heart hardened.

Then Lily appeared.

She sat in an office chair eating crackers.

A female assistant stood beside her.

Lily looked confused.

Not injured.

Rosa nearly collapsed from relief.

“Mama!”

She jumped down.

Margaret stopped her.

“Not yet.”

Rosa’s expression changed.

“You knew she was taken?”

Margaret looked at Ethan.

“I told Victoria this was idiotic.”

Victoria laughed.

“But you still came.”

“To prevent you from making it worse.”

“You already ruined everything.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Let Lily go.”

“The document first.”

Ethan held up the case.

Victoria’s eyes followed it.

“There.”

“Everything you wanted.”

“Let her walk to Rosa.”

Victoria nodded toward the assistant.

The woman released Lily.

Lily ran.

Rosa dropped to her knees.

She wrapped both arms around her daughter.

Lily buried her face against Rosa’s neck.

“I want Button.”

Rosa sobbed.

“You’ll have him soon.”

Ethan closed his eyes in relief.

Then handed the case to Victoria.

She opened it.

Read the document.

And smiled.

“You destroyed our wedding for this child.”

Ethan looked at Lily.

“No.”

“You destroyed it.”

Victoria ripped the codicil in half.

Then again.

Then again.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Ethan simply watched.

Victoria scattered the pieces across the concrete.

“There.”

She looked triumphant.

“Now the contract stands.”

Ethan almost looked sorry for her.

“No.”

Victoria’s smile faded.

“What?”

David Morris’s voice came through Ethan’s concealed microphone.

“The certified copy was filed this morning.”

Victoria went completely still.

Ethan looked at her.

“You kidnapped my daughter for a piece of paper that no longer mattered.”

Sirens erupted outside.

Victoria turned toward Margaret.

“You knew?”

Margaret stared at her.

“No.”

Police entered from every direction.

Victoria tried to run.

She made it less than twenty feet.

Margaret did not move.

She simply closed her eyes as officers approached.

Ethan walked toward Rosa.

Lily reached for him.

He picked her up.

She wrapped one arm around his neck.

Rosa leaned against his shoulder.

For the first time, the three of them stood together.

Not billionaire.

Not maid.

Not secret daughter.

A family.

Broken.

Complicated.

Terrified.

May you like

But finally together.
