Chapter 4 – The Investigation Hidden in Plain Sight
Supervisor Morris expected Agent Carter to file a complaint.
Instead, he surprised everyone.
"I wasn't traveling for vacation."
He removed another document from his briefcase.
"I was already assigned to conduct an unannounced audit of airport security procedures."
The supervisors exchanged stunned looks.
"This airport?" Morris asked.
"Yes."
He slid the sealed assignment letter across the armrest.
"My team has spent four months reviewing complaints involving unlawful passenger searches."
Officer Brooks stared at the floor.
Carter continued calmly.
"Today's incident wasn't the investigation."
He paused.
"It became evidence."
The words spread through the cabin like electricity.
Passengers who had felt helpless only minutes earlier suddenly understood why the calm stranger had never raised his voice.
He hadn't needed to.
Truth was doing the work for him.
Carter turned toward the passengers.
"I apologize for the delay to your flight."
A gray-haired woman smiled.
"No, Agent."
She looked directly at Officer Brooks.
"I think we all needed to see this."
Several passengers quietly applauded.
Not loudly.
