Chapter 2 – The Badge Beneath the Shirt

The silence inside the cabin became heavier than the roar of the aircraft's air-conditioning.
Officer Daniel Brooks felt the blood drain from his face.
The gold badge wasn't a novelty. It wasn't a security contractor's credential. It carried the unmistakable federal seal, polished from years of use instead of display.
His grip loosened immediately.
Passengers who had been recording discreetly with their phones lowered them just enough to exchange confused glances.
The man calmly buttoned the top of his white shirt.
Not hurried.
Not angry.
Just deliberate.
Then he looked directly at the officer.
"You searched me without consent," he said quietly.
Brooks opened his mouth.
"I... I believed you matched the description."
"The description?"
The federal agent tilted his head slightly.
"Male. Dark hair. Navy jacket. Between thirty-five and fifty."
Brooks swallowed.
"Yes, sir."
The agent almost smiled.
"That describes nearly a third of the men on this flight."
No one laughed.
The words landed harder because they were true.
The flight attendant standing nearby instinctively took one careful step backward, realizing she had witnessed something that would almost certainly become an official investigation.
The agent slowly reached into his inside pocket and produced a leather credential wallet.
He flipped it open.
Federal Special Agent Mason Carter.
Internal Investigations Division.
Brooks' heartbeat stopped for a second.
Internal Investigations.
Not just another federal officer.
The people who investigated abuse of authority by law enforcement.
"You know who we are?" Carter asked.
"Yes... sir."
"Good."

He closed the wallet.
"Then you know why today just became very complicated."
