Chapter 3 – The Flight That Never Left the Gate
The captain had already received three separate calls from the cabin crew before the aircraft pushed back from the gate.
Instead of departure clearance, the cockpit received another instruction.
Remain parked.
Airport security supervisors were coming onboard.
Passengers whispered among themselves.
Some assumed there was a terrorist threat.
Others believed someone had been arrested.
No one imagined the officer was the one in trouble.
Within six minutes, two airport police supervisors entered the aircraft.
Both stopped when they recognized Mason Carter.
One of them removed his cap.
"Agent Carter."
Carter nodded politely.
"I'd appreciate if we handled this professionally."
"Of course."
Supervisor Helen Morris turned toward Officer Brooks.
"What happened?"
Brooks attempted to explain.
"The passenger matched a BOLO description, and I believed immediate action was justified."
Morris looked toward Carter.
"Did he request identification?"
"No."
"Did he ask for consent?"
"No."
"Did he have probable cause?"
"No."
Every answer became shorter.
Every answer became worse.
The supervisor closed her notebook.
"You opened his clothing in front of over one hundred witnesses."
Brooks couldn't deny it.
Several passengers quietly raised their phones.
One businessman spoke up.
"I recorded the entire thing."
A woman across the aisle nodded.
"So did I."
Then another voice.
"And me."

The cabin suddenly contained dozens of independent witnesses.
Brooks realized there would be no version of events he could rewrite later.
