Chapter 3: The House That Pretended to Be Family

Ethan walked into the kitchen.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

The closer he got, the more details he saw.

Emily’s swollen feet red from standing too long.

The shaking in her hands she tried to hide.

The way she instinctively stepped back when he approached—like she was afraid of taking up space.

He stopped beside her.

“Emily…”

Her eyes flickered up.

Not relief.

Not joy.

Fear mixed with hope.

“I’m fine,” she whispered quickly, like she had practiced it. “It’s okay. I’m almost done.”

Ethan looked at the sink.

At the mountain of dishes.

At the burnt smell of forgotten food.

At the luxury takeout containers his sisters had left behind like garbage.

Something in him went cold.

He turned again.

This time, his voice was sharper.

“Who told her to do this?”

Silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

The kind that avoids responsibility.

Madison finally spoke.

“She didn’t have anything else to do.”

Ethan stared at her.

“You’re serious?”

Olivia rolled her eyes.

“She’s pregnant, not fragile glass.”

That was the moment Ethan understood:

This wasn’t an accident.

This wasn’t misunderstanding.

This was routine.

Emily had not been asked.

She had been assigned.

Like staff.

Like property.

Like she didn’t belong to the family—but served it.

Ethan’s breathing slowed.

Dangerously calm.

Then he said:

“Emily… stop washing the dishes.”

Emily froze.

Just that sentence alone felt illegal in this house.

She hesitated.

Then slowly turned off the water.

Her hands trembled as she stepped back.

And for the first time that night, she looked like she was allowed to exist.
