Chapter 2: The Moment the Silence Broke

Ethan did not move at first.
Not because he didn’t understand.
But because his mind refused to accept what his eyes were showing him.
The kitchen light hummed softly above Emily’s trembling figure. The sink water kept running. Soap clung to her fingers like it had become part of her skin.
Behind him, Madison laughed once—light, careless.
“Emily, don’t ignore me. I said bring ice.”
That sentence did it.
Something inside Ethan cracked—not loudly, not dramatically.
Quietly.
Like glass under pressure finally giving way.
He turned slowly.
His eyes found Madison first.
Then Olivia.
Then Chloe.
All three relaxed. Comfortable. Untouched by guilt.
And Linda… still sitting in the armchair, watching everything with the calmness of someone who had decided not to intervene.
Ethan’s voice came out low.
“Tell me what’s going on.”
Olivia didn’t even look up.
“She’s just helping around the house.”
Madison shrugged.
“Yeah. She’s home all day anyway.”
Chloe smirked faintly.
“Relax, Ethan. Don’t be dramatic.”
Dramatic.
That word echoed inside his chest like an insult.
Behind him, Emily finally turned her head slightly.
Her lips parted.
But no words came out.
May you like
Because she had learned something painful:
Speaking only made things worse.
