A year later, the Howard estate looked different.
The fear had disappeared.
So had the lies.
Richard sold the mansion.
He donated part of the recovered money to organizations helping victims of domestic abuse and coercive control.
He never again ignored warning signs simply because they were inconvenient.
Elena gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
They named her Grace.

On Grace's first birthday, Detective Ruiz stopped by with a small gift.
A silver music box.
"I figured she deserved something happier than evidence files," he joked.
Everyone laughed.
Before leaving, Ruiz looked at Elena.
"You knew she was going to attack you, didn't you?"
Elena held her daughter close.
"I knew she would eventually."
"So you prepared."
"I prepared because hope isn't a plan."
Ruiz smiled.
"That's why you're alive."
As the afternoon sunlight filled the quiet home, Elena watched Grace take her first unsteady steps across the living room floor.

The same way her mother had escaped.
