Chapter 2 – The House of Lies

The first siren echoed through the estate less than six minutes later.

Vanessa's tears stopped instantly.

She hadn't expected the police to arrive so quickly.

The front doors burst open as Detective Gabriel Ruiz entered with two uniformed officers and a team of paramedics.

"No one leaves the house," Ruiz said calmly.

His voice wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

The authority in it silenced every person standing in the foyer.

The paramedics hurried toward Elena.

Mrs. Howard finally rushed to her side, trembling.

"Oh, my God... Elena..."

Elena allowed herself to look weak.

She winced as they examined her abdomen.

"My baby..." she whispered.

"We're taking you to the hospital immediately," one medic said.

Detective Ruiz knelt beside her.

"Mrs. Carter."

She barely opened her eyes.

"It's exactly as we discussed," she murmured.

Ruiz gave a small nod.

Then he stood and faced the room.

"I'll need everyone's phones."

Vanessa blinked.

"What? Why?"

"This is now an attempted homicide investigation."

The color drained from her face.

"Attempted... what?"

Ruiz looked directly at her.

"The victim informed us weeks ago that she believed someone inside this house intended to harm her."

The room exploded with whispers.

Richard Howard—the wealthy owner of the mansion and Elena's husband—turned sharply toward the detective.

"What are you talking about?"

Ruiz reached into his briefcase.

He placed several sealed envelopes on the dining table.

"Mrs. Carter submitted sworn statements."

Another envelope.

"Medical reports documenting previous injuries."

Another.

"Financial records."

Then one final item.

A hard drive.

"And over three hundred hours of surveillance footage."

Vanessa's breathing became shallow.

"No..."

Ruiz watched her carefully.

"The cameras were installed legally."

Mrs. Howard stared in disbelief.

"Cameras?"

Richard looked confused.

"I never approved cameras."

Elena opened her eyes.

"You didn't have to."

Her voice was quiet.

"I own half this house."

Silence.

Months earlier, when the threats had begun, Elena had quietly hired a private security company.

They hid miniature cameras inside smoke detectors, picture frames, antique clocks, and decorative wall sconces.

Not to spy.

To survive.

Ruiz plugged the hard drive into his laptop.

One video appeared on the large television in the sitting room.

The timestamp showed three weeks earlier.

Vanessa entered Elena's bedroom while everyone believed the house was empty.

She opened a bottle of prenatal vitamins.

She emptied every pill.

Then replaced them with harmless-looking capsules.

Mrs. Howard gasped.

Another clip.

Vanessa whispered into her phone.

"The miscarriage has to happen before the baby is born."

Richard took one slow step backward.

"No..."

Another recording.

Vanessa speaking with a man inside a luxury hotel.

"As soon as Elena loses the baby, Richard will finally divorce her."

The man kissed her.

Richard recognized him instantly.

It was his own business partner.

Every lie Vanessa had told over the past year shattered in less than five minutes.

And Detective Ruiz hadn't even reached the staircase footage.
