Chapter 19 - The Testimony
Marcus Vane’s trial began six months later.
The evidence filled an entire secured room.
Javier’s files proved fraud, bribery, reckless endangerment, and theft from the relief trust.
Dr. Keene testified about the plan to incapacitate Alex.
Genevieve testified against Marcus and her father in exchange for a reduced sentence.
Charles refused every agreement.
He insisted Genevieve had acted alone until prosecutors played the pier recording.
Lucia was the final witness.
She entered the courtroom wearing a navy suit instead of her housekeeper’s uniform.
Sofi sat behind Alex with Benny in her lap.
Lucia described Javier’s last weeks.
She explained the failed alarms, the missing trust payments, and the fear he tried to hide.
Marcus’s attorney asked why she had remained silent for two years.
Lucia looked directly at the jury.
“Because silence is expensive when you are poor.”
“Telling the truth can cost a job, a home, medicine, and sometimes a life.”
“Powerful people call that hesitation.”
“For families like mine, it is survival.”
The courtroom remained silent.
Marcus was convicted on every major charge.
Charles was convicted of conspiracy, financial fraud, witness intimidation, and attempted extortion.
Dr. Keene lost his medical license and received a prison sentence.
Genevieve pleaded guilty to conspiracy and child endangerment.
Before sentencing, she asked to speak with Alex.
They met inside a courthouse interview room.
She looked smaller without the clothing, photographers, and perfect lighting that once surrounded her.
“I did love you,” she said.
Alex believed she might think that was true.
“You loved who you could become beside me.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was raised to believe security meant never being powerless.”
“So you made everyone around you powerless.”
She lowered her head.
“I am sorry about Sofi.”
“You should tell her that after you have learned not to expect forgiveness.”
Genevieve received seven years.
Marcus received thirty-two.
Charles received eighteen.
Ward Global survived, but it became a smaller company.
Alex sold the penthouse, private aircraft, and most of his personal investments.
The proceeds funded worker compensation and restored the relief trust.
He created an independent safety council with authority above executive management.
Lucia was offered a settlement large enough to never work again.
She accepted compensation owed to Javier.
She rejected the rest.
Instead, she enrolled in a corporate compliance program and joined the new safety council.
On her first day, Alex showed her the office.
Her name was printed on the glass door.

Sofi ran inside and spun in the chair.
“Mommy is a boss now.”
Lucia laughed.
Alex leaned against the doorway.
“She always was.”
Sofi looked between them.
