Chapter 12 - The Sunrise Box

The old apartment building stood between a laundromat and a closed bakery in Jackson Heights.
Lucia had moved out after Javier’s death because she could no longer afford the rent.
The current landlord recognized her and unlocked the roof access.
Alex, Lucia, Julian, and Ruiz climbed six flights of narrow stairs.
The sunrise box remained behind a rusted water tank.
Javier had built it from cedar and painted a yellow sun across the lid.
The lock had been broken recently.
Lucia opened it.
Inside were photographs, a tiny pair of baby shoes, and a folded blanket.
No computer drive.
No documents.
Alex examined the dust.
A clean rectangular mark showed where something had rested.
Marcus had arrived first.
Ruiz checked the roof cameras.
The building had none.
Lucia searched through the photographs.
Javier appeared in nearly every one.
In the final picture, he held newborn Sofi beside the water tank.
A yellow construction crane rose behind them.
Lucia turned the photo over.
Three words were written on the back.
SUNRISE SAVINGS BANK.
Julian searched the address.
The bank had closed four years earlier.
Its safe-deposit accounts had been transferred to another institution.
Naomi contacted the bank’s legal department.
A box remained registered to Javier Herrera.
It had never been opened after his death.
The branch required a death certificate and proof of Lucia’s identity.
They drove downtown under federal escort.
Inside the vault, Lucia inserted the key taped behind the photograph.
The box contained an external drive, a sealed letter, and a small silver bracelet intended for Sofi.
Lucia opened the letter first.
My love,
If you are reading this, I failed to come home.
Do not blame yourself for what I chose to do.
A man can survive losing a job.
He cannot survive teaching his daughter that fear is stronger than truth.
The drive contains every record I could save.
Trust no one who asks you to destroy it.
Give Sofi the bracelet when she is old enough to understand that her father loved her more than his own safety.
Lucia pressed the paper to her lips.
Alex turned away to give her privacy.
Naomi connected the drive to an evidence computer.
Thousands of files appeared.
Invoices.
Audio recordings.
Internal approvals.
Private letters signed by Thomas Ward.
A folder labeled MV contained direct evidence against Marcus.
Another folder was labeled CP.
Charles Prescott.
The final folder bore Alex’s own initials.
AW.
Alex opened it.
Inside was a video recorded by his father one week before his death.
Thomas Ward stared into the camera.

“Alexander, if you are seeing this, Marcus has already betrayed us.”
“But before you condemn him, you need to know that I created him.”
