Chapter 1 - The Sentence That Silenced the Garden

Sofi tightened both arms around her stuffed rabbit.
Her eyes moved from Alex to Genevieve.
“I saw her kissing the man with the shiny snake ring,” she whispered.
A murmur swept through the garden.
Genevieve’s fingers jerked away from Alex’s hand.
For one sharp second, naked fear crossed her face.
Then it vanished beneath a wounded smile.
“She is three years old,” Genevieve said.
“She probably saw me greeting one of the guests.”
Sofi shook her head so hard that her loose curls struck her cheeks.
“No.”
“You said Mr. Alex would sign after the wedding.”
“And then the money would go away.”
The silence that followed was heavier than the one before it.
Alex remained on one knee.
He did not look at Genevieve.
He watched Sofi’s face instead.
Children could misunderstand words.
They could confuse affection with romance.
But a three-year-old did not invent financial language she had never heard.
“What man?” Alex asked gently.
Sofi pointed toward the manor.
“The tall one who was in your office yesterday.”
“He has gray hair here.”
She touched the side of her head.
“And a ring like a snake eating its tail.”
Alex rose slowly.
His gaze found Julian standing beside the first row of chairs.
Julian’s expression had hardened.
There were only four men with unrestricted access to Alex’s private office.
One was Julian.
One was Alex’s attorney.
One was the estate manager.
The fourth was Marcus Vane, chief financial officer of Ward Global and Alex’s closest professional adviser for nearly a decade.
Marcus wore a silver ouroboros ring on his right hand.
Genevieve stepped toward Alex.
“This is absurd.”
“We are humiliating ourselves in front of everyone we know.”
Alex finally looked at her.
“No.”
“You are afraid of something.”
Her lips parted.
Before she could answer, Lucia rushed from the staff entrance.
Her face was pale with terror.
She hurried down the aisle and pulled Sofi against her body.
“I’m so sorry, Mr. Ward.”
“She didn’t understand what she heard.”
Sofi buried her face in her mother’s skirt.
Alex saw the desperation in Lucia’s eyes.
It was not the panic of an employee whose child had interrupted an expensive wedding.
It was the fear of a woman who had been carrying dangerous information alone.
“You knew,” Alex said.
Lucia stopped breathing.
Genevieve’s head snapped toward her.
“Lucia,” she warned.
The single word contained a threat.
Alex heard it.
So did Julian.
Alex removed the ring from his fingers and returned it to the velvet box.
“This ceremony is suspended.”
Gasps erupted among the guests.
Genevieve seized his wrist.
“You cannot be serious.”
Alex gently removed her hand.
“I have never been more serious.”
He turned to the estate security director.
“Close the gates.”
“No guest leaves until every camera recording from the last two weeks has been secured.”
Genevieve stared at him.
Then her eyes shifted toward the balcony above the guest wing.
A figure moved behind the glass.
May you like
The curtain closed before Alex could see the face.
But he saw the flash of silver on the man’s hand.
