Chapter 3 – A Secret Finally Revealed

That evening, Mr. Rivera asked everyone to gather in the dining room.
Even Mrs. Mercedes, who insisted she should leave, was invited to sit at the family table.
She hesitated.
"I don't belong here."
Mr. Rivera pulled out the chair beside him.
"You've belonged here longer than anyone."
The room fell quiet.
He opened an old wooden box that had remained locked for decades.
Inside were faded photographs.
One showed a young Mercedes carrying his newborn son while his late wife rested in a hospital bed.
Another captured Mercedes sleeping in a chair beside his mother's hospital room after staying awake for three nights.
Then came stacks of receipts.
Medical bills.
School tuition.
Emergency repairs.
Every one of them had been quietly paid by Mercedes when the family business had nearly collapsed twenty years earlier.
No one had known.
Not even his children.
"I promised your mother I would never tell anyone," Mr. Rivera said quietly.
"Mercedes kept this family standing while the rest of us were falling apart."
Tears filled every eye around the table.
The youngest granddaughter walked over and hugged Mercedes.
May you like
"You've always been family."
Mercedes could no longer hold back her tears.
