Chapter 2 – The Price of a Lie

No one spoke.

The security footage ended, but the silence it left behind was louder than the accusation that had nearly destroyed an innocent woman.

Mrs. Mercedes stood motionless, her trembling hands still gripping the edge of her white apron. For the first time in twenty years, she looked like a stranger inside the house she had devoted her life to.

The daughter-in-law's confidence disappeared.

Her face drained of color as every pair of eyes turned toward her.

"You... planted it?" one of the grandchildren whispered.

She forced a nervous laugh.

"It... it was just a misunderstanding."

"No," the youngest son replied, his voice calm but razor sharp. "A misunderstanding doesn't involve hiding jewelry in someone's pocket."

Mr. Rivera slowly walked toward the television.

He replayed the footage.

Again.

And again.

Each replay made the betrayal more undeniable.

Finally, he turned to his daughter-in-law.

"You tried to destroy the reputation of the woman who helped raise this family."

She lowered her eyes.

"I was angry..."

Mr. Rivera interrupted her.

May you like

"No. You were cruel."

For the first time since marrying into the Rivera family, she realized no amount of wealth could protect her from the truth.
