Chapter 19 - The Last Lie of Thomas Cole

Federal agents reached Eleanor’s house before Nathan.

Eleanor was alive.

William had not attacked her.

He had gone there voluntarily.

When Nathan arrived, his mother and uncle sat across from each other in the library.

Eleanor looked exhausted.

William looked furious.

Nathan closed the door.

“No more lies.”

Neither spoke.

Nathan placed Victoria’s information on the table.

“Mother.”

“Did you know Father’s medication was altered?”

Eleanor began crying.

“Yes.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Grace stood beside him.

“Why didn’t you stop it?”

Eleanor struggled to speak.

“I didn’t know it would kill him.”

She explained that Daniel claimed Thomas was having paranoid episodes.

He convinced Eleanor that Thomas needed a different medication.

Eleanor gave Daniel access to Thomas’s prescription schedule.

Several days later, she discovered Daniel had replaced pills.

She confronted him.

He assured her the medication would merely make Thomas tired.

“You believed him?”

Nathan asked.

“No.”

Eleanor whispered.

“But by then I was terrified.”

“Daniel told me if I exposed him, Richard would destroy you.”

Nathan shook his head.

“You protected me by letting Father die?”

“I did not know he would die.”

William slammed his fist against the table.

“But you knew afterward.”

Eleanor sobbed.

“Yes.”

Silence filled the room.

Grace watched Nathan carefully.

Nathan looked at his mother.

“I cannot erase what you did.”

Eleanor nodded.

“I know.”

“You will tell prosecutors everything.”

“Yes.”

“No lawyers hiding facts.”

“Yes.”

“No family settlements.”

Eleanor nodded again.

“Yes.”

For the first time, Nathan realized accountability did not always look like revenge.

Sometimes it looked like forcing the truth into daylight.

Three weeks later, the custody court officially recognized Nathan as Lily’s biological father.

Grace retained primary custody.

Nathan received full parental rights through a cooperative agreement they created together.

Judge Reeves was replaced.

The false psychiatric report was formally discredited.

Grace’s name was cleared.

Richard Vale was indicted on numerous federal charges.

Daniel Ross faced trial for crimes reaching back more than a decade.

Victoria entered a cooperation agreement.

Cole Industries survived.

Smaller.

Less powerful.

But free from Vale control.

Nathan sold the family penthouse.

He kept the mansion only temporarily.

He told Grace it no longer felt like a home.

On a quiet Sunday morning, Nathan attempted to make pancakes for Lily.

The first batch burned.

The second stuck to the pan.

The third looked like pieces of a damaged map.

Lily stared at her plate.

“You’re bad at this.”

Nathan laughed.

“I’m improving.”

Grace smiled from the doorway.

Lily dipped one ugly pancake in syrup.

“I still like it.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

She looked back.

For a moment, all the lost years stood silently between them.

Not forgotten.

Not erased.

But no longer controlling what came next.

Then the doorbell rang.

Nathan opened the door.

Marcus stood outside holding another sealed envelope.

Nathan stared.

“What now?”

Marcus looked unusually unsettled.

“This came from Thomas’s estate.”

Nathan frowned.

“We already opened his final instructions.”

Marcus shook his head.

May you like

“No.”

“This one was scheduled for delivery only after Lily was legally recognized as your daughter.”
