Chapter 1 - The Word That Broke His World

Nathan Cole had negotiated hostile takeovers without blinking.

He had watched companies collapse across conference tables and men twice his age beg him for another week.

But one trembling word from a four-year-old girl destroyed every defense he had built.

“Daddy.”

The kitchen became painfully silent.

Nathan stared at Lily as if the floor had disappeared beneath him.

Grace remained on her knees, one arm locked protectively around her daughter and the other hanging weakly at her side.

A dark bruise was already forming beneath the sleeve of her maid’s uniform.

Victoria stood several feet away.

The hockey stick lay on the tile between them.

Nathan slowly turned toward his fiancée.

“What happened?”

Victoria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Nathan stepped closer.

“I asked what happened.”

“She attacked me.”

Victoria finally forced the words out.

“She became hysterical.”

Grace looked up in disbelief.

Nathan’s eyes dropped to the stick.

Then to Grace’s injured shoulder.

Then to Lily shaking against her mother.

Victoria immediately understood what he was thinking.

“She grabbed it first.”

Grace gave a weak laugh filled with pain.

“I never touched it.”

Nathan crouched beside Lily.

The child instantly buried her face against Grace.

Nathan stopped himself from reaching toward her.

“Grace.”

His voice cracked.

“Tell me what you meant.”

Grace’s eyes filled.

“She’s yours.”

Nathan stared at her.

“No.”

Grace swallowed.

“She was born four years and seven months ago.”

Nathan’s face went white.

The dates aligned instantly.

Five years earlier, Grace Bennett had been the woman Nathan planned to marry.

Then she had disappeared overnight.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Only a short message saying their relationship had been a mistake.

Nathan had spent months looking for her.

His father had eventually convinced him Grace had taken money to leave.

Nathan had hated her for years.

Now she was sitting on his kitchen floor with his daughter in her arms.

“My father told me you left.”

Grace’s expression changed.

“Your father made me leave.”

Nathan stopped breathing.

Victoria suddenly moved toward the doorway.

Nathan stood.

“Don’t.”

She froze.

He took out his phone.

Victoria’s eyes widened.

“Who are you calling?”

“An ambulance.”

“Nathan, think about what this will look like.”

He stared at her.

“I am.”

Grace whispered his name.

Nathan turned.

She looked terrified.

“Don’t call the police.”

Nathan frowned.

“Why?”

Grace looked toward Victoria.

Victoria’s face became perfectly still.

Grace tightened her arms around Lily.

“Because Victoria already did.”

At that exact moment, red and blue lights flashed across the kitchen windows.

Nathan looked outside.

May you like

Three police vehicles had stopped in front of the mansion.

And somehow, they had arrived before Nathan had made a single call.
