Chapter 17 - The Empire Falls

The announcement shocked Wall Street.
Nathan transferred controlling shares into a protected employee trust.
Vale debt instruments immediately lost much of their strategic power.
Cole Industries stock dropped thirty percent in one day.
Business networks called Nathan reckless.
Some called him insane.
He did not care.
Federal prosecutors arrested Daniel Ross on charges related to kidnapping, extortion, financial crimes, evidence tampering, and conspiracy.
Richard Vale remained in custody.
Victoria was charged separately.
Judge Malcolm Reeves resigned hours before investigators raided his office.
Then the ledger became public.
Nathan released a verified portion through Marcus’s legal team.
Names appeared.
Executives.
Investigators.
A medical examiner.
Two prosecutors.
Three judges.
The scandal spread beyond either family.
Grace watched television coverage from Nathan’s guest room.
Lily slept beside her.
Nathan entered quietly.
“Court hearing is tomorrow.”
Grace muted the television.
“Marcus thinks we’ll win?”
“Yes.”
Nathan sat near the window.
Grace studied him.
“You lost almost half your net worth this week.”
Nathan smiled faintly.
“I still own more houses than any reasonable person needs.”
Grace did not smile.
“You know what I mean.”
Nathan looked at her.
“I spent five years believing money was proof my father had made the right choices.”
“He kept telling me responsibility meant protecting the institution.”
Grace listened.
Nathan continued.
“I finally understand that he confused responsibility with fear.”
Grace looked down.
“He regretted what he did.”
“That doesn’t undo it.”
“No.”
Nathan nodded.
“But admitting he was wrong matters.”
Grace looked toward Lily.
Nathan followed her gaze.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
Grace frowned.
“For what?”
“For not finding you.”
“You didn’t know.”
“I should have questioned the story.”
Grace looked at him.
“We were both manipulated.”
Nathan nodded slowly.
“I want to be Lily’s father.”
Grace’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
“I don’t mean occasionally.”
“I know.”
“I mean school mornings.”
“Doctor appointments.”
“Bad dreams.”
“Birthdays.”
“Everything.”
Grace smiled through tears.
“You should probably ask Lily.”
Nathan looked toward the bed.
Two small eyes were open.
Lily had been listening.
Nathan approached.
“Were you pretending to sleep?”
Lily nodded.
Nathan sat beside her.
“I have a question.”
Lily hugged her rabbit.
“Okay.”
“Would it be all right if I learned how to be your dad?”
Lily thought carefully.
“Do you know how to make pancakes?”
Nathan looked at Grace.
“No.”
Lily sighed dramatically.
“You have to learn.”
Nathan laughed.
“I can do that.”
Lily smiled.
“Then yes.”
For the first time since everything began, the room felt safe.
Then Marcus called.
Nathan answered.
The relief disappeared from his face.
Grace immediately noticed.
“What?”
Nathan slowly lowered the phone.
“Victoria requested a private meeting.”
Grace frowned.
“Why would you agree?”
May you like
Nathan looked toward the television.
“Because she says Richard Vale isn’t Lily’s biggest remaining threat.”
