Chapter 19 - THE CHOICE

Norah did not stop the upload.

Not immediately.

She read.

That mattered.

Thomas had assumed she would panic.

He assumed loyalty would make her blind.

He had misunderstood her.

Norah followed the file hierarchy.

Thomas’s crimes occupied one archive.

Gabriel’s occupied another.

But the release script did not distinguish guilt from association.

Employees.

Contractors.

Drivers.

Family members.

Hundreds of people would be exposed whether they had committed crimes or not.

This was not justice.

It was destruction.

Upload: twenty-six percent.

Norah began separating the datasets.

The system fought her.

She rewrote permissions.

Upload: thirty-eight.

She isolated Thomas’s archive.

Upload: forty-nine.

Then a secondary lock activated.

A message appeared.

HELLO, NORAH.

She stared.

Thomas had written this specifically for her.

A second line appeared.

SAMUEL MADE THE SAME CHOICE.

Then she understood the deepest secret.

Her grandfather had possessed evidence capable of destroying both Thomas and Antonio’s organizations.

He refused to release everything because innocent people would be destroyed with the guilty.

That was why he encoded it.

Not cowardice.

Precision.

Norah smiled.

“You really should not challenge an accountant with selective disclosure.”

She rerouted the upload.

Thomas’s crimes.

Victor’s crimes.

The compromised judges.

The bribed officials.

The captains who knowingly accepted money.

Everything supported by direct evidence.

Nothing else.

Upload resumed.

Inside Warehouse Nine, Thomas’s phone buzzed.

His face changed.

The release had begun.

Not against Gabriel.

Against him.

Federal investigators.

Journalists.

Financial institutions.

Oversight agencies.

Multiple recipients.

Thomas looked toward the camera.

He knew.

Norah had beaten him.

He raised his gun toward Gabriel.

Declan moved.

Gabriel moved faster.

One shot cracked through the warehouse.

Thomas’s weapon fell.

Gabriel stood several feet away.

Thomas staggered against a crate.

Alive.

Wounded.

Defeated.

Gabriel could have ended it.

Everyone expected him to.

He did not.

Instead, he kicked Thomas’s gun away.

“You wanted my father’s empire.”

Gabriel said.

Thomas glared at him.

Gabriel looked at the captains.

“You can watch him answer for everything he built.”

Sirens sounded in the distance.

Not Gabriel’s people.

Authorities.

Thomas laughed weakly.

“You think they’re only coming for me?”

Gabriel looked toward the warehouse doors.

“No.”

He knew.

Norah had released evidence involving people inside his own organization too.

Gabriel’s face remained calm.

Thomas smiled.

“She destroyed you.”

“No.”

Gabriel looked directly into the nearest camera.

At Norah.

“She told the truth.”

Norah stopped breathing.

That answer mattered more than she wanted it to.

The warehouse doors opened.

Agents entered.

Weapons raised.

Orders shouted.

Gabriel did not run.

Declan did not either.

Several captains were arrested immediately.

Thomas was taken alive.

Claire reached Declan.

Elena reached Gabriel.

Norah finally entered the warehouse.

She expected anger.

Gabriel walked directly toward her.

“You released the files.”

“The ones supported by evidence.”

“Some involve my people.”

“Yes.”

“You knew what would happen.”

“Yes.”

He stopped inches away.

Norah forced herself not to look away.

“If you want an accountant who lies for you, fire me.”

Gabriel stared at her.

Then he gently touched her cheek.

“I hired you because numbers don’t lie.”

Norah swallowed.

“People do.”

“Yes.”

“Especially you.”

“Frequently.”

That almost made her laugh.

Then agents approached Gabriel.

He looked toward them.

One held a warrant.

Not for murder.

Not racketeering.

Financial conspiracy tied to several old companies Thomas had manipulated.

Gabriel handed Norah his phone.

“My lawyer’s number.”

“Marcus was your lawyer.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Then I suppose you should find me another one.”

The agents led him away.

Norah stood in the warehouse holding his phone.

Thomas had fallen.

The archive was public.

The organization was fractured.

And Gabriel Moretti was leaving in handcuffs.

For the first time since this began, Norah had no idea whether following the truth had saved him—

or destroyed the only man she had started to love.
