Chapter 11 - BOX 317

The vault door had been welded shut years ago.

Someone had recently cut it open.

Norah ran her fingers across fresh metal scars.

“They’re ahead of us.”

Gabriel entered first.

The underground storage facility smelled of dust and rust.

Rows of private boxes covered both walls.

317 was near the back.

Open.

Empty.

Gabriel’s expression darkened.

“We’re too late.”

Norah looked closer.

“No.”

The metal box was empty.

But the dust beneath it had been disturbed in a perfect rectangle.

She knelt.

“There was something behind it.”

Mateo removed the panel.

Inside was a narrow envelope.

Samuel Kessler’s handwriting appeared across the front.

FOR NORAH.

Her hands began shaking.

Gabriel noticed.

“You don’t have to open it here.”

“Yes.”

She did.

Inside was one photograph.

Norah at sixteen.

Her grandfather beside her.

A black signet ring hung from a chain around Samuel’s neck.

On the back he had written.

THE KEY IS NEVER WHERE THE THIEF LOOKS.

Norah frowned.

No ring.

No access sequence.

Then she noticed the photograph’s border.

Tiny raised dots.

Braille-like.

Not Braille.

Numbers.

She translated them using Samuel’s puzzle system.

PIANO.

Margaret’s house.

Again.

Gabriel swore.

Thomas had assumed the physical ring was inside box 317.

Samuel had moved it decades ago.

Margaret had unknowingly been guarding both the puzzle books and the ring.

Norah called her mother.

No answer.

Her stomach dropped.

Again.

Nothing.

Mateo tried the security team stationed outside Margaret’s house.

No response.

Gabriel was already walking.

“We go now.”

Norah grabbed the envelope.

Then the vault lights switched off.

A voice came through hidden speakers.

“Seventeen years.”

Thomas Vale.

Gabriel stopped.

“I waited seventeen years to hear Antonio’s son breathing in the dark.”

Gabriel drew his gun.

Norah looked upward.

Camera.

Thomas was watching.

“You’ve become impressive, Gabriel.”

Thomas continued.

“But your father was better.”

Gabriel’s face became stone.

“Where is my mother?”

“With people who understand loyalty better than yours.”

“And Margaret?”

Thomas laughed.

“You should ask Norah.”

Her pulse jumped.

“What does that mean?”

“Your mother made a choice.”

Norah stepped beneath the camera.

“What choice?”

“She gave me the ring.”

Norah’s world tilted.

“No.”

“She traded it for your life.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It will.”

Thomas sounded almost amused.

“Your mother has always been very practical.”

A screen switched on at the far end of the vault.

Live video.

Margaret sat inside a vehicle.

Alive.

Beside her sat Isabella.

Neither appeared restrained.

Gabriel stared.

Norah did too.

Then Margaret looked directly into the camera.

“I’m sorry.”

Norah felt the betrayal physically.

Thomas spoke.

“The ring is mine.”

Gabriel turned toward Marcus.

The old attorney looked equally shocked.

Then Isabella raised her hand.

The black signet ring was on her finger.

Thomas’s voice became triumphant.

“At midnight, the Vale Reserve returns to me.”

Norah forced herself to look beyond the obvious.

Margaret had apologized.

But her left hand was tapping against her knee.

Three taps.

Pause.

One.

Four.

Norah’s breath caught.

Her mother was not betraying them.

She was sending numbers.

3-1-4.

Pi.

A childhood code.

Norah watched.

Another sequence.

1-5.

Fifteen.

Then 9.

3.14159.

Not random.

Coordinates hidden as digits of pi.

Margaret had deliberately gone with Thomas.

She was leading them somewhere.

Norah quietly closed the laptop.

Gabriel looked at her.

She did not explain until they were outside.

May you like

Then she whispered.

“My mother gave him a fake ring.”
