Chapter 12: The River Below

For several seconds after the collapse, no one spoke.

The thunder of twisting steel echoed through the underground network before fading into silence.

Agent Harris looked toward the darkness.

"Seal every entrance."

"Nobody goes in until the engineers clear it."

Several agents hurried away.

Frank quietly shook his head.

"If that bridge gave way..."

"...there's a river nearly a hundred feet below."

Vincent stared into the darkness.

Lucia was gone.

Whether she was dead...

...or simply beyond reach...

No one knew.

Paramedics arrived moments later.

Marcus sat against the wall while a medic dressed the wound in his shoulder.

"It went straight through," she said.

"You're lucky."

Marcus laughed softly.

"I've never been lucky."

Vincent remained beside him.

Neither man knew what to say.

Twenty-five years of lies could not be erased in a single night.

Finally Marcus broke the silence.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

Vincent answered honestly.

"You shouldn't."

Marcus nodded.

"But I wanted you to know..."

"...I meant what I said."

"I was wrong."

Vincent looked at the young man he had raised.

Not the heir to an empire.

Not the traitor.

Just a broken human being.

"I know."

Agent Harris approached with a tablet in his hand.

"We've finished the first review of the files on Elena's flash drive."

He looked directly at Vincent.

"It confirms everything."

"The forged executions."

"The financial theft."

"The political bribery."

"The murders."

Frank let out a slow breath.

"Antonio finally has justice."

Elena lowered her eyes.

"My father waited twenty-three years."

Harris nodded respectfully.

"And tonight..."

"...he was right."

The surviving mercenaries were led away in handcuffs.

One of them suddenly stopped.

He looked directly at Vincent.

"The Chancellor isn't finished."

Agent Harris pushed him forward.

"Keep moving."

The mercenary smiled.

"You think this ends with Lucia?"

"It doesn't."

"She worked for someone."

"So did we."

"The Chancellor doesn't lose."

Then he was gone.

Hours later...

The first rays of sunrise filtered through the ruined chapel above.

For the first time in decades, the Torino estate was filled with federal agents instead of mafia soldiers.

Every office was searched.

Every safe was opened.

Every hidden room was photographed.

Vincent watched it all in silence.

The empire he had spent his life building was coming apart brick by brick.

Surprisingly...

He felt relief.

In the library, Agent Harris placed a thick folder on the table.

"There are enough charges here to dismantle what's left of your organization."

Vincent nodded.

"It should be dismantled."

Harris looked surprised.

"You're cooperating?"

"I've spent thirty years believing I was protecting my family."

Vincent glanced toward Marcus and Elena.

"I was protecting my pride."

"I'm done with that."

Later that afternoon...

Reporters gathered outside the estate gates.

News helicopters circled overhead.

Every television station carried the same headline:

FEDERAL RAID EXPOSES DECADES OF ORGANIZED CRIME

Inside the mansion, Vincent stood alone in his office.

The room looked strangely empty.

The portrait above the fireplace had been removed as evidence.

The safe stood open.

The desk drawers were bare.

Elena knocked gently on the door.

"You wanted to see me?"

Vincent nodded.

He placed a small wooden box on the desk.

"I found this in my father's study years ago."

"I never knew who it belonged to."

Elena opened it.

Inside was Antonio Ricci's old pocket watch.

The back was engraved with a single sentence:

"Loyalty without truth becomes slavery."

Tears filled Elena's eyes.

"My father thought he lost this."

Vincent smiled sadly.

"I think..."

"...it finally found its way home."

As Elena left the room, Frank entered quietly.

"The recovery teams found something."

Vincent's expression changed.

"The train?"

Frank nodded.

"They found the wreck."

"And?"

Frank hesitated.

"No body."

Vincent slowly looked out the window.

Toward the distant river beyond the estate.

Lucia had vanished once before.

Now...

She had vanished again.

Agent Harris entered moments later.

"We searched every carriage."

"Nothing."

Vincent whispered,

"She's alive."

Harris folded his arms.

"We'll find her."

Vincent didn't answer.

Because somewhere deep inside...

He knew Lucia better than anyone.

If she was alive...

She wasn't running.

She was planning.

And far away, in an unknown location, a secure satellite phone began to ring.

A woman's injured hand reached for it.

May you like

Before answering, she looked out over a gray coastline and quietly whispered,

"This isn't over."
