Chapter 11: The Weight of the Truth

The underground chamber exploded into chaos.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!"
The command echoed through the tunnel as armored vehicles rolled to a stop, their floodlights turning night into day.
Mercenaries opened fire first.
The agents answered immediately.
Gunfire ripped through the cavern.
Concrete splintered.
Bullets sparked against the abandoned train.
Vincent pulled Frank behind the engine while Elena dragged Marcus into cover.
Lucia disappeared into the smoke.
The leader of the federal team advanced with practiced precision.
"Clear the left side!"
"Move! Move!"
Within seconds, two mercenaries were disarmed.
A third surrendered.
The others fought desperately.
Their employer—the mysterious Chancellor—had never tolerated failure.
They knew capture was almost as dangerous as death.
Marcus looked at Elena.
"You called them."
She nodded.
"My father never trusted that the truth alone would protect us."
"He believed evidence had to reach someone who couldn't be bought."
"So twenty-three years ago..."
"...he mailed copies outside the city."
Marcus frowned.
"To who?"
"The FBI's Organized Crime Division."
Vincent stared at her.
"They kept it all this time?"
"They reopened the investigation six months ago."
Frank smiled weakly.
"Antonio finally got his witness."
A federal agent rushed toward them.
"Mr. Torino?"
Vincent nodded cautiously.
The agent lowered his weapon.
"I'm Special Agent Daniel Harris."
"We've been trying to reach you for weeks."
Vincent raised an eyebrow.
"Why?"
Harris looked directly at him.
"Because someone inside your organization has been feeding intelligence to an international criminal network."
Vincent answered quietly.
"I know."
Another burst of gunfire echoed across the tunnel.
Marcus suddenly looked toward the abandoned train.
"Lucia..."
She wasn't fighting.
She was running.
Straight toward the locomotive.
"She's escaping!" Marcus shouted.
Without thinking, he limped after her.
Vincent hesitated only a moment before following.
Elena sighed.
"I knew he'd do that."
She ran after them.
Lucia climbed into the engineer's cabin.
The old train was damaged but still operational.
She slammed the controls forward.
The engine roared.
Steel wheels groaned.
The locomotive lurched ahead.
Marcus reached the side ladder just as the train began moving.
"Lucia!"
She looked down at him.
For a moment...
She looked almost like the woman who had once carried a frightened little boy through the rain.
Then she drew her pistol.
"Don't follow me."
Marcus refused to let go.
"You lied to me..."
"But you're still my mother."
Lucia's hand trembled.
Only slightly.
"I stopped being your mother the day I chose revenge."
She fired.
The bullet missed Marcus by inches, striking the metal railing instead.
Vincent reached the moving train.
"Marcus!"
Marcus ignored him.
He climbed onto the side platform.
Lucia stepped backward into the cabin.
She aimed again.
This time...
She couldn't pull the trigger.
Marcus looked into her eyes.
"I don't hate you."
The words hit harder than any bullet.
Lucia's breathing became uneven.
For the first time in decades...
The armor around her heart cracked.
Then a single shot echoed behind them.
A mercenary—one of the Chancellor's men—had survived the firefight.
He fired toward Vincent.
Marcus saw it first.
Without thinking...
He jumped.
The bullet struck Marcus in the shoulder instead of Vincent.
He fell backward off the train.
"Marcus!"
Vincent lunged forward, catching him just before he hit the tracks.
The train continued moving.
Lucia stood frozen in the doorway.
Watching.
For one brief moment...
She almost jumped off to help.
Instead...
She disappeared into the darkness.
Federal agents quickly surrounded the wounded mercenary.
Within minutes, the gunfire stopped.
Silence settled over the tunnel.
Marcus leaned against Vincent, pale but conscious.
"You okay?" Vincent asked.
Marcus laughed weakly.
"I've had better days."
Vincent looked at the blood spreading across Marcus's shirt.
"You saved my life."
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
"I just finally did the right thing."
Agent Harris approached.
"Medical team is on the way."
He looked at Vincent.
"The Chancellor's people are in custody."
"But Lucia escaped."
Elena stared toward the dark tunnel where the train had vanished.
"No..."
"She didn't escape."
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed to the abandoned control panel mounted on the wall.
Frank's eyes widened.
"Oh no..."
"The bridge."
Vincent frowned.
"What bridge?"
Frank answered quietly.
"The railway crosses an underground river."
"It hasn't been inspected in over thirty years."
As if on cue...
A distant metallic groan echoed through the tunnels.
Then came the sound of twisting steel.
Finally...
A thunderous crash.
The earth shook beneath everyone's feet.
The old railway bridge had collapsed.
Somewhere deep beneath the city...
The train carrying Lucia had disappeared into the darkness.
No one knew whether she had survived.
May you like
And no one could reach the wreckage.
Not yet.
