Chapter 1: The Woman in the Closet

Vincent Torino had survived thirty-two assassination attempts.

He had been shot.

Poisoned.

Blown off the road.

Once, someone had even planted explosives beneath the church where his daughter's funeral had been held.

None of those moments felt as dangerous as standing in absolute darkness with Elena's trembling hand covering his mouth.

Outside the closet, Marcus continued giving orders with calm authority.

"Split up. Check every inch."

A flashlight beam swept across the bedroom.

Another drawer slammed shut.

Someone kicked beneath the king-size bed.

Vincent remained perfectly still.

Years of instinct told him exactly when to move.

Tonight...

The smartest move was doing nothing.

Elena slowly removed her hand from his mouth.

"If you speak," she whispered, "we both die."

Vincent nodded once.

Only then did she finally breathe.

For the first time since dragging him inside the closet, she looked less like a frightened maid...

...and more like someone carrying a burden that had been crushing her for years.

"You knew," Vincent whispered.

She didn't answer immediately.

Outside, Marcus cursed.

"He's not here."

Another voice replied.

"Then we wait."

The bedroom fell eerily quiet.

Marcus wasn't leaving.

He intended to ambush Vincent the moment he returned.

Elena leaned closer.

"I heard them planning everything four days ago."

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

"You heard my nephew planning to kill me..."

"...and you waited until tonight?"

"I tried to warn you."

"When?"

"You never noticed."

That answer irritated him.

"I own this house."

"You own the walls," Elena replied quietly.

"You've never noticed the people cleaning them."

Those words landed harder than any bullet.

For years Vincent had believed loyalty flowed upward.

He rewarded soldiers.

Protected captains.

Punished traitors.

But the invisible people...

The cooks.

Gardeners.

Drivers.

Housekeepers.

He barely knew their names.

Yet somehow...

One of them had just saved his life.

A sudden vibration interrupted them.

Marcus's phone.

"Yeah?"

Silence.

Then Marcus smiled.

"Good."

He ended the call.

"Tony says Uncle Vincent turned his phone off twenty minutes ago."

"So?"

"So that means he's close."

Vincent's stomach tightened.

Tony.

His head of security.

The man responsible for protecting every entrance to the estate.

Another betrayal.

Elena noticed the realization in his eyes.

"It gets worse."

"How?"

"They replaced three guards before sunset."

Vincent frowned.

"Impossible."

"I watched it happen."

"No one changes shifts without my authorization."

"They had it."

Vincent stared at her.

Someone had forged his approval.

Or someone with equal authority had issued it.

There were only four people in the organization capable of doing that.

Marcus.

Tony.

The family lawyer...

...or Vincent himself.

Someone had duplicated his biometric authorization.

That meant weeks of preparation.

Maybe months.

Outside, footsteps approached the closet.

Elena instantly drew the compact pistol hidden beneath her apron.

Vincent looked at her in disbelief.

"You know how to use that?"

She answered without taking her eyes off the door.

"I was taught before I learned algebra."

The doorknob turned.

Slowly.

Vincent instinctively reached for the weapon at his ankle.

Gone.

Security had required everyone entering the mansion to surrender firearms after official business.

For the first time in decades...

Vincent Torino was unarmed.

The closet door opened halfway.

One of Marcus's men peered inside.

His flashlight swept across hanging suits.

Designer shoes.

Leather luggage.

He stepped closer.

Another step...

Then another.

He was less than six feet away.

Elena's finger rested lightly on the trigger.

No fear.

Only calculation.

The man suddenly stopped.

His radio crackled.

"Found something downstairs."

He sighed.

"I'm coming."

The closet door closed again.

Neither Vincent nor Elena moved for nearly thirty seconds.

Finally...

Elena lowered the pistol.

"That was too close."

Vincent looked at her differently now.

Not as an employee.

Not even as an ally.

As a professional.

"You've done this before."

She hesitated.

"Yes."

"Who are you?"

Instead of answering...

She reached into her apron pocket.

From inside she removed a faded photograph.

Vincent took it.

The picture had been folded so many times that the edges had nearly disappeared.

It showed a younger Vincent.

Twenty-five years earlier.

Standing beside a burning warehouse after one of the bloodiest nights of the Torino war.

Behind him...

Barely visible...

A little girl stood crying beside an ambulance.

Vincent barely remembered that night.

But Elena remembered every second.

She quietly pointed toward the child.

"That's me."

Vincent froze.

His heartbeat slowed.

Impossible.

He looked from the picture...

...to Elena's face.

The eyes.

The scar near her eyebrow.

Suddenly...

He remembered.

One terrified child.

One dead father.

One decision made in the middle of chaos.

"You..." Vincent whispered.

Before he could finish—

A deafening explosion ripped through the first floor of the mansion.

The entire house shook violently.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Outside the bedroom, Marcus shouted,

"Move! Somebody's inside!"

Elena grabbed Vincent's arm.

Her expression had changed completely.

"They're no longer waiting for you."

May you like

She looked toward the hidden service passage concealed behind the closet wall.

"They're hunting us."
