Chapter 5 - THE CHILD IN THE BOARDROOM

At 11:52 a.m., Ethan entered the Blackwood Industries boardroom carrying the sealed cup of poisoned tea.
Lily walked beside him.
Dr. Hayes followed with the toxicology report.
Detective Ruiz and two federal agents waited outside.
Victor sat at the far end of the long walnut table.
He had changed suits.
He looked calm.
No one watching him would have guessed he had fled a hidden medical facility that morning.
Twelve directors filled the room.
Several avoided Ethan’s eyes.
Victor smiled at Lily.
“Why is the housekeeper’s niece here?”
Ethan pulled out a chair for her.
“My daughter is here because this vote concerns her inheritance.”
The room became silent.
Victor laughed.
“That child is not related to you.”
Ethan placed the locket, hospital bracelet, and preliminary DNA report on the table.
The probability of paternity exceeded 99.99 percent.
Victor did not touch the paper.
“The sample was contaminated.”
“A proper court will reject it.”
“We already collected a second sample under police supervision.”
Ethan slid another folder forward.
Victor’s smile disappeared.
One director asked where Amelia was.
Ethan answered honestly.
“Kidnapped.”
“Held for seven years inside facilities funded through Blackwood Health Systems.”
Victor struck the table.
“This is an outrageous performance.”
Ethan lifted the poisoned tea.
“This was prepared in my home under your orders.”
“Nora has already confessed.”
“She is a frightened employee inventing stories.”
Lily stood on her chair.
“I saw Aunt Nora put drops in it.”
Victor looked at her.
“You should be careful, little girl.”
The words sounded gentle.
The threat beneath them was unmistakable.
Ethan moved between them.
“You will never speak to her again.”
The board’s general counsel attempted to continue the medical incapacity vote.
Ethan asked him to read the trust clause regarding a surviving child.
The attorney hesitated.
Then he confirmed that Lily’s existence terminated Victor’s conditional succession rights.
Victor had no legal claim to permanent control.
A board member near the window removed his glasses.
“You knew the child lived.”
Victor said nothing.
Ethan activated the screen.
Security footage from the mansion showed Nora poisoning the tea.
The live video showed Victor entering Amelia’s room with a syringe.
The St. Catherine ledger appeared next.
Directors began whispering.
Victor stood.
“This meeting is over.”
“No,” Ethan said.
“It is beginning.”
Federal agents entered through both doors.
Victor looked toward the hallway.
Then he smiled.
A slow, confident smile.
“You brought police to the wrong building.”
Ethan’s phone rang.

Marcus’s voice came through.
“Ravenscroft is burning.”
