Chapter 19 - THE MEMORY LILY KEPT
Lily remembered Margaret visiting Nora’s apartment when she was five.
Margaret gave her a wooden puzzle box.
She told Lily never to open it around Victor.
Nora later took the box away.
After returning to the mansion, Nora hid several old belongings in the servants’ attic.
Marcus searched the storage room.
He found the puzzle box beneath a stack of blankets.
Lily remembered how to open it.
Three wooden stars turned in sequence.
The lid lifted.
Inside was a small silver drive.
Margaret began crying.
“I thought Nora destroyed it.”
The drive contained Dr. Jonathan Hale’s original research files.
Margaret stole them from Conrad and hid them with Lily.
She believed no one would search a child’s toy.
The research included a legal instruction.
No company could own the treatment exclusively.
If activated by Amelia and Lily, the patent would enter a public medical trust.
Conrad wanted to prevent that transfer.
He needed the family dead on paper but alive long enough to unlock the files privately.
Amelia and Lily completed the biometric verification under federal supervision.
The patent moved into an independent foundation.
No Blackwood company controlled it.
The treatment entered public clinical research.
Margaret accepted responsibility for her role in the hospital fire.
She agreed to testify against Voss Meridian and Charles Dane.
Her cooperation did not erase the lives lost.
It helped prevent the final theft.
Months later, the treatment entered a trial for children with a rare cardiac condition.
One of the first patients was Nora’s grandson.
Ethan struggled with the decision.
Amelia reminded him that medicine should not punish a child for an adult’s crimes.
The boy received treatment.
It worked.
Lily asked whether that meant Nora had been forgiven.
“No,” Amelia said.
“It means the child was helped.”
“Those are different things.”
