Chapter 20 - THE CUP ON THE TABLE

One year after the poisoned tea, Ethan returned to the mansion for Lily’s eighth birthday.

The dining room looked different.

The long formal table was gone.

A round wooden table stood near the windows.

Lily had chosen it because no seat appeared more important than another.

Amelia walked without a cane now.

Scars remained along her neck.

She wore them uncovered.

Marcus brought a telescope.

Dr. Hayes brought a chemistry set that Amelia immediately confiscated until supervision could be arranged.

Maya Chen brought no business documents.

Grace House sent a card signed by twenty-seven survivors.

Nora sent nothing.

That boundary remained in place.

After cake, Lily carried a porcelain teapot into the room.

Ethan stared at it.

She noticed.

“This one is safe.”

“I watched Mommy make it.”

Amelia poured three cups.

Ethan lifted his slowly.

Lily placed both hands around her own cup.

“Last year, I screamed.”

“Yes.”

“I thought you were going to die.”

“You saved me.”

She looked toward Amelia.

“And then we saved Mommy.”

Amelia touched her daughter’s hair.

“We saved one another.”

They drank together.

Outside, evening light covered the gardens.

No security alarm sounded.

No locked door separated them.

No camera watched from a toy.

For a while, the story ended there.

Then Marcus entered carrying an evidence envelope.

His expression was serious.

“This arrived from the federal archive.”

Inside was a photograph recovered from Charles Dane’s private safe.

It showed the hospital nursery hours before the fire.

Amelia lay unconscious in the background.

Grace Holloway stood near the door holding newborn Lily.

Beside her was another nurse carrying a second infant.

The second baby wore a bracelet marked BLACKWOOD.

Ethan stared at the image.

“There was only one child.”

Amelia took the photograph.

“I gave birth after losing consciousness.”

“The doctors told me Lily was the only baby.”

Marcus placed a birth record on the table.

The document listed twin girls.

Lily Blackwood.

And Rose Blackwood.

Rose had been declared dead eleven minutes before the fire began.

No body had ever been recovered.

A note beneath the record carried Margaret Vale’s signature.

SECOND INFANT TRANSFERRED BEFORE EVACUATION.

Lily looked from the paper to her parents.

“I have a sister?”

Ethan turned the photograph over.

Someone had written an address on the back.

A boarding school in Vermont.

Beneath it were four words.

ROSE DOES NOT KNOW.

The family Conrad tried to erase had been restored.

Amelia had returned.

Lily had found her father.

The empire had fallen.

But somewhere beyond the mountains, another Blackwood daughter had been living under a stolen name for eight years.

May you like

And this time, the people who took her might already know Ethan was coming.
