CHAPTER 4 – The Price of Secrets

The detectives uncovered the rest within forty-eight hours.
Ryan hadn't been hiding from police.
He had been hiding from a violent loan-sharking network.
Emily had secretly emptied her own savings to keep those men away from the family.
Every time Daniel traveled for business, Ryan moved from the basement into the hidden compartment beneath the sofa.
Not because he wanted comfort.
Because if anyone forced their way inside...
That was the safest place to disappear.
Emily looked exhausted.
"I wasn't protecting Ryan."
She looked at Lily.
"I was protecting her."
Daniel remained silent.
He remembered every business trip.
Every excuse.
Every strange moment Emily insisted he leave the living room untouched.
Every single piece finally fit together.
But one truth remained.
"You lied to me."
Emily closed her eyes.
"Every day."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"I don't know if I can forgive that."
Ryan stood before being led away by federal investigators.
He looked at Daniel.
"You deserved the truth."
"I was just too ashamed to tell it."

Daniel didn't answer.
Sometimes silence was heavier than anger.
