CHAPTER 2 – The Man Beneath the Sofa

The room stayed silent long enough for everyone to hear the stranger breathing.
Daniel Carter never considered himself an emotional man. Years of running a successful construction company had taught him that panic solved nothing. Problems had answers. Betrayal had explanations.
But this...
This was something no explanation could soften.
His six-year-old daughter, Lily, slowly hid behind his leg while keeping one finger pointed at the man beneath the sofa.
"Daddy..."
Her tiny voice barely escaped.
"He's still there."
Daniel didn't answer.
He couldn't.
His eyes remained locked on the stranger curled inside the hidden compartment like an animal trapped in a cage.
The man finally swallowed.
"I... I can explain."
"No," Daniel replied calmly.
"You'll wait."
His voice wasn't loud.
It didn't have to be.
The authority in those two words froze everyone.
Emily's lips trembled.
"Daniel... please..."
He slowly turned toward his wife.
"For five years," he said quietly, "I've trusted you with everything I own."
A pause.
"My home."
Another pause.
"My daughter."
Then his eyes drifted back toward the hidden compartment.
"And apparently... another man."
Emily burst into tears.
"It's not what you think."
Daniel almost smiled.
He hated that sentence.
Because no innocent person ever used it.
The stranger slowly climbed out, raising both hands.
"My name is Ryan."
Daniel didn't move.
"I don't care."
Ryan looked toward Emily, silently begging for help.
She couldn't even meet his eyes.
Lily suddenly asked the one question every adult wished she hadn't.
"Mommy..."
"Why was he sleeping under our couch?"
May you like
No one answered.
The innocence in her voice hurt more than any confession ever could.
