CHAPTER 3 – The Hidden Truth

Police arrived twelve minutes later.

Neither Daniel nor Emily had called.

Their next-door neighbor had heard Lily crying and reported a possible domestic disturbance.

Officer Megan Brooks entered cautiously.

"What happened here?"

Daniel simply pointed at the hidden compartment.

"We found him."

Ryan didn't resist.

He sat quietly on the living room floor while officers searched the house.

Within minutes another officer called out.

"Detective..."

"You need to see this."

Inside a locked storage closet upstairs were men's clothes.

Toothbrush.

Laptop.

Prescription medication.

Everything suggested someone had been living inside the house.

Not for a day.

For months.

Emily completely broke down.

"I never wanted this."

Daniel stared at her.

"Then why?"

Her shoulders shook.

"Ryan is my younger brother."

The room went silent again.

Daniel frowned.

"My brother."

"He disappeared years ago because he owed dangerous people hundreds of thousands of dollars."

"They would have killed him."

"I thought if I hid him here... they'd eventually stop looking."

Daniel blinked.

"You hid your own brother..."

"...inside our house?"

Emily nodded through tears.

"I couldn't tell you."

"If you knew... you'd never allow Lily near him."

Ryan lowered his head.

"She's right."

"I've made terrible mistakes."

"But I've never touched your daughter."

"Never."

Daniel believed that part.

Oddly...

It was the only thing that felt true all night.
